Travel search to become personal, focused, nosy

Travel search engines come in a variety of sizes, shapes and brands all aiming to become our first choice when planning a trip. The ways in which we search for travel options today are very different from those we used only a few years ago, and likely, the ones we will use in the future. A new study, tapping the wants of the most connected travelers, says new technologies may create changes for our future travel planning methods.

“Today, we stand at the forefront of a technological evolution in travel that we refer to as Online Travel 3.0 which recognizes the power shift from suppliers to retailers and to end consumers,” says Stephane Durand, Director, Online & Leisure at Amadeus, a major provider of advanced technology solutions for the global travel and tourism industry.

An Amadeus-commissioned, global study identified the online shopping behavior and future motivations of trend-setting travelers, indicating younger, savvy consumers are mastering travel information more. While not representative of the mainstream consumer, they have the most sophisticated shopping needs and represent the early adopters whose current behaviors and preferences are leading indicators of consumer behavior in the future.

What do we want and are likely to see in the future?

Truly private sales:
Look for travel sellers to micro-target promotions to specific consumers offering products that are actually relevant for the buyer.

Cumulative intelligence:
Learning from our online behavior over time, programs will aggregate common patterns while micro-segmentation will help companies analyze behavior and deliver increasingly intelligent results.

Smart systems and virtual private assistants:
Devices will become smart and interconnected, while storing and analyzing consumer behavior information. The program will recognize and process inputs from sites visited and will act as an assistant on the consumer’s behalf.

The study, Empowering Inspiration was based on surveying the behavior of 4,638 travelers in the U.S., U.K., Germany, India, Russia and Brazil.

Russians ready to travel, voting on destinations

While only 15% of Russia‘s 142 million population have ever traveled abroad, in the last decade Russia has been one of the world’s fastest growing outbound travel markets and the world of travel wants to know what they are all about. The My Planet Travel Awards, voted on by the Russian public, promises to tell the world what Russians are looking for when they travel.

“The inaugural My Planet Travel Awards continue to surpasses all expectations, as international hotels, resorts, and service providers sign up to be part of Russia’s unique travel awards” says eturbonews.com.

Following a huge nationwide awareness campaign covered by the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) and a public online vote, the awards will culminate with a gala dinner in September 2011 at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Moscow where the winners will be announced.

Guests at the gala dinner will include up to 400 people from Russia and around the world, including nominees and other representatives of the travel industry, celebrities, journalists, relevant government agencies and trade associations.As the My Planet Travel Awards have been created to reflect Russian ready to travel. Hoping to map their tastes in travel, the voting process is conducted in the Russian language as is a promotional YouTube video.

Yesterday it was announced that Hong Kong is the latest and 100th nominee to join the My Planet Travel Awards 2011 and will be represented in the category Best Hotel in Asia, Australasia and the Indian Ocean.

Students to travel the world in search of tea

College students across the United States will spend the Summer in a variety of ways. Some will work, some will play and others will continue their education on campus or in a variety of summer options that involve travel. At Harding University in Arkansas, some will discover that the things we drink play important roles in our culture as students travel the world in search of tea.

“It’s a way of approaching history by studying a drink and its role in culture, society, politics and economics ” Jeff Hopper, a professor of humanities at Harding told Newstimes.com.

Earning 9 credit hours, students will trace history over the summer through the movement and changes of tea, studying how each culture incorporated the drink into their lives. The six-student group will stop in China, Indonesia, Russia among other countries where tea played a critical cultural role. Four of the students were on a similar journey last year with a coffee theme.
“Many more people in the world drink tea than coffee,” Hopper added. “Tea is thousands of years old. Coffee is not. It takes us back further, it’s embedded much more into religious ceremonies and cultures.”

They will even stop in Boston where the group will commemorate the original Tea Party and its backlash on the East India Tea Company.

“The East India Tea Company was the largest in the world,” Hopper said. “That would be today like spilling a tanker load of Exxon oil on purpose. Tea was a symbolic commodity in the relationship between the colonies and Great Britain.”

The trip will end in London, where they will visit the Twinings Tea Museum and enjoy high tea at Fortner Mansion.

“High tea is a British term for a celebratory, ceremonial drinking of tea with special food and treats,” Hopper said. “They have sandwiches, biscuits and cookies and it’s traditionally held in the late afternoon. If I were a British gentleman, and I wanted to entertain you, the most elegant way short of a dress-up dinner would be to invite you to tea at 4 p.m. The amount of amenities, jellies and currants determines the formality.”

There are no plans for a third beverage-oriented trip next summer although another coffee-themed trip may be organized.
