Video of the Day – IranAir 727 makes emergency landing


Just one week ago on October 18th, an IranAir Boeing 727 landed at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport without the use of its front landing gear, after the bay of the nose gear failed to open on approach.

The crew performed a landing without the nose gear on runway 29L and came to a stand still on both the main gear and the nose of the aircraft. The flight, traveling from Moscow to Iran, held 94 passengers and 19 crew members; none were injured in the landing.

Video of the landing has now surfaced on Youtube, demonstrating an incredibly skillful landing executed by the pilot and his crew.

Plane Answers: Do jets have keys, my first airline flight and overwing exits

Hi Kent –

Two items, please…

Silly question here, but I’ve always wondered, does a typical jetliner have “keys”? You know, like you have keys to the car. And is the same true for a 757 or 767, whatever?

Believe it or not, Lee, they do have keys, but only for the cockpit door. Fortunately they’re standardized, so we only need to carry one key. For security reasons, this key doesn’t open our ‘bank-vault’ style door inflight.

Also, do you remember your first REAL solo? You know, when they handed you the “keys” (maybe) and said, “you’re the man today.”

And not in some Cessna or tree-topper. When you got that big break after you were hired by one of the big name commercial airlines. You were behind the wheel of your first big jetliner taxiing across the field and made that final turn only to see a mile of runway in front of you knowing it was up to you to get 50 tons of flying brick in the air.

What’d all that feel like?


Since airliners are flown as a crew with two or three pilots, for me, it never really felt like my first solo flight did. There’s just nothing to compare to that experience; it’s one that I’ll always remember.

I do remember just a few things from my first flight in an airliner. It took two hours to taxi our 727 out of Newark airport and I was amazed that any airline could make money with such long takeoff delays. Fortunately, I’ve never had as long of a taxi since.

But really, I can’t recall anything else on my first flight at a major airline probably because it really wasn’t entirely different from flying a smaller aircraft. It was exciting at the time, and I’m sure I was awash in the new procedures I had just learned, but I can’t say flying a 12,000 pound airplane is that much less exhilarating than flying a 500,000 pound aircraft. The same is especially true when transitioning from, say a 737 to a 777.

Oh, I do remember that there was no hotel room for me that night in Indianapolis, so I slept in the hotel’s conference room instead. But the flight itself was a blur.

On the little card that shows what to do in case of an emergency the little pictures show the little cartoon guy putting the door on the seat. Wouldn’t this get in the way? Why not just chuck it out the opening?

I wondered about that as well. Some aircraft have two over wing exits next to each other, so it may be preferable to place the door on the seat (I would use the one behind or in front of the exit row) rather than risk hitting someone who is already standing on the wing outside.

Also, keep in mind that it’s more common to have those over wing exits used in an evacuation that may or may not have resulted in any damage to the airplane. I’m sure those doors are hugely expensive in that case.

The most exclusive plane-hotel in Costa Rica

Not all aircrafts are destined to be cut into pieces and melted for reuse in another life. Here is a unique example of one in Costa Rica — a fully-outfitted, meticulously detailed, two bedroom, Boeing 727 fuselage suite.

This refurbished, vintage, 1965 Boeing 727 airframe once shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines (Colombia). Now the phoenix is ready for its future duty as the most exclusive hotel suite in Costa Rica.

The airframe was salvaged piece by piece from its San Jose airport resting place and carefully transported on five, big-rig trucks to the jungles of Manuel Antonio where it was resurrected into a unique jumbo hotel suite.

This classic plane-hotel, nestled on the edge of the National Park in the Costa Verde area is perched on a 50-foot pedestal. At this height, guests can enjoy scenic ocean and jungle views from the hard wood deck built atop the plane’s former right wing.

The plane’s interior is Costa Rican teak paneling from the cockpit to the tail. Furnishings are hand-carved, teak furniture from Java , Indonesia. This 727 home also features two air conditioned bedrooms — one with two queen sized beds and the other with one queen sized bed, each with its own private bath, a flat screen TV, a kitchenette, dining area foyer, an ocean view terrace, a private entrance up a river rock, spiral staircase, and 360 degrees of surrounding gardens. Enjoy an evening on the terrace, spying on tree top neighbors such as sloths, toucans and monkeys.

The refurbished Boeing 727 home is not the only such dwelling in the world. This hotel suite was inspired by a Forbes Magazine article about a company offering hurricane-proof living via surplus Boeing 727 airframes. The hotel took it to the next level, though, by finding some new ways to introduce convenience and luxury to the plane’s aluminum scrap frame.

Now where did my jumbo jet go? There it is!

Anyone lose a Boeing 727 lately? I just checked my hangar and all of mine are in stock. Girlfriend check one out? Nope, she’s on the yacht.

Well someone is missing one. Vietnamese officials at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport can’t seem to figure out who left the aircraft at their airport late last year; it’s currently sitting collecting dust at on the tarmac with an outdated order for “essential maintenance”. Nobody has bothered to claim it.

Looking at the aircraft, there is a Cambodian flag on the skin with the name “Air Dream”, but the Vietnamese don’t seem to have any information on the airline — whether that’s a testament to a defunct, outdated airline and aircraft or the failures of the communist bureaucracy, I’m not sure.

Meantime, I have half a nerve to send one of my Vietnamese cousins up with a briefcase full of parking fees and say that the 727 belongs to my family. I’ve been meaning to bedazzle one of my aircraft and park it out on my front lawn in The Hamptons. Maybe Gridskipper will pick up the story.
