Help Quark Expeditions Select The ‘Polar Big 5’

Big game hunters once coined the term “Big 5” in reference to the five toughest animals to hunt on foot in Africa. Today, visitors to that continent still keep their eyes peeled for those iconic creatures, although these days they are more likely to shoot them with their cameras. The animals that make up the Big 5 include lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes, which are amongst the most fearsome creatures found on our planet.

As a salute to the African Big 5, adventure travel company Quark Expeditions, which specializes in excursions to the Arctic and Antarctic, has asked us to help them select the “Polar Big 5.” They’ve narrowed down the selection to nine contenders, each of which inhabit the colder regions of the world. The nominees include the king penguin, walrus, polar bear, reindeer, elephant seal, leopard seal, musk ox, humpback whale and albatross. Quark has even set up a page for us to cast our votes to help bestow this honor on the five eventual recipients.

To entice us all into voting, the company is also giving away a ten-day voyage to the Antarctic, a dream destination for many. One lucky person who submits their vote for the Polar Big 5 will be selected to receive a fantastic trip to the bottom of the world that takes place in November 2013. For more details on the prize, click here.

The Polar Big 5 contest runs through November 30 of this year. To enter, simply head over to PolarBig5.com and make your selections. Any entry that doesn’t include the polar bear should be invalidated automatically.

Protect Your Favorite Outdoor Places By Sharing Your Photos Online

Clif Bar, a company known for creating tasty and nutritional energy bars, has launched a new initiative that invites us to share our favorite outdoor or travel moments online. The program isn’t just about posting pretty pictures on the Internet, however, as it also serves as an opportunity for us to protect our favorite outdoor places.

The company recently launched MeetTheMoment.com, which serves as the hub for this new program. Visitors to the website are encouraged to upload images that best encapsulate their favorite outdoor adventures and share details of what made that particular moment so special. For each image that is uploaded, Clif Bar will then donate $5 to one of five non-profit organizations that focuses on protecting our outdoor spaces. Visitors to the site are also encouraged to share their favorite images on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and each time they do another $1 will be donated to the organizations. The non-profits that will be the recipients of those donations include the Access Fund; International Mountain Bicycling Association; Leave No Trace; Surfrider Foundation and the Winter Wildlands Alliance.

The program runs through the end of October, at which time a panel of judges will examine the 25 moments that were shared the most often. Their selection of the best overall moment will determine a grand prize winner who will have an additional $10,000 donated to the non-profit of their choice in their name. They’ll also receive a year’s supply of Clif Bars too!

This is an incredibly easy way to not only share your favorite travel or outdoor adventures with others but also generate some cash for five organizations that work hard to keep our favorite outdoor places healthy and pristine. I can’t think of a much better cause than that.

Off-The-Beaten-Path Latvia Nominated The Most Beautiful Country In The World

When many people are asked what they think the most beautiful country in the world is, they respond with popular favorites like Greece, New Zealand or Brazil. While these countries appear to be among the top in the world, a contest sponsored by First Choice is showing there are also some off-the-beaten-path destinations that many people find aesthetically pleasing.

The contest, called “Conflict of Pinterest,” asked Twitter and Pinterest users to put in their two cents on the topic. While Twitter users voted by submitting a tweet, Pinterest users created eye-catching boards for their country of choice.

So far, the top 10 countries in order are:

1) Latvia
2) Mexico
3) Turkey
4) Indonesia
5) United Kingdom
6) Italy
7) New Zealand
8) Brazil
9) India
10) Canada

Party On A Private Plane With AirAsiaX’s New Facebook Campaign

One lucky fan of AirAsiaX’s Facebook page will win the trip of a lifetime – a private plane ride from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on an Airbus A330 for themselves and 302 of their Facebook friends, plus three nights of free accommodations.

The contest is being held in celebration of the airline’s new Sydney to Kuala Lumpur route, which launched earlier this month. The trip will take place November 2-5.

“Our bold move is part of our social media promotion drive offering our awesome guests a little X-citement, while testing our social media strength and influence. We believe that the idea will also lift our brand further in Australia and the surrounding region,” said AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani (pictured below).

To enter, fans can use a specially designed app to “fill the plane” (manually or automatically).

What we really wonder – do most people have enough Facebook friends to fill a plane? And do you really want to fly with all of those people? And which 11 friends will you choose to join you in first class?

Just one little side note – amenities on the plane, like booze and food, aren’t included.

Viator.com launches dream travel job contest for budding filmmakers

If you’re a travel buff with a passion for film, you could be in the running to win the gig of a lifetime from online travel agency Viator.com.

Through Viator’s “Win Your Dream Travel Job” contest, four winners will be tasked with traveling through 20 countries in 60 days in both North America and Europe, and documenting their adventures on camera. In addition to providing content for Viator’s library of travel videos, the teams will also produce final wrap-up videos, which will be pitted against each other in an online Facebook competition with $10,000 awarded to the top-voted team.

To enter, submit a one-to-three minute video on Viator’s Facebook page showing off your travel experience, storytelling abilities, and cinematic prowess on one of three subjects: things to do in your city, top travel tips, or memorable travel experiences. Every two weeks starting March 15, Viator will select a new winner. The last call for submissions is April 25.
