Photo of the Day: Horse in Torres del Paine

Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park, located at the southern end of South America, is the kind of place you romanticize when you think of wild, unspoiled nature. I’ve never been, but I have a vision in my head of towering pinnacles of rock, windswept fields of grass, and serene babbling brooks. It turns out the real thing is just as beautiful – Flickr user LeaningLeft snapped this wonderful shot of a horse bathed in sunlight, set against the park’s majestic mountain-scape.

I like the optimism of today’s photo, courtesy of Flickr user JasonBechtel. It’s a great way to kick off a brand new year. Jason snapped this photo out in South Dakota – a land you can imagine inhabited by limitless blue skies and crisp grasslands, gently swaying in the breeze. What really pulls the image together is the framing of the wide-open gate. The open door seems to beckon the viewer forward, inviting them into a land of new opportunities, adventure and promise: the perfect sentiment for all any travelers hoping to start the new year off right. Bring it on!

Since we have a new blogger coming onto the team soon, my mind has been on Hong Kong a lot (guess where he’s from?). I’ve often referred to the former British colony as “Southeast Asia on training wheels,” where you can experience all of the virtues of the far east yet still enjoy the comforts of the west. Signs in English, easy public transportation, horse racing and plush hotels all contrast with night markets, street food and a strong dollar. What’s not to love?

lecerle snapped this photo at Happy Valley in the north of Hong Kong Island and it makes me miss the country dearly.

With that warm spell that swept through much of the country last week, many of us got the false hope that spring was on the way — that we’d soon be walking outside barefoot, chasing cats, jumping from tree to tree and frolicking about. Ah, but Mother Nature is a tempting sorceress, and before we knew it, it was cold and snowy again, especially here in the the Midwest. I look forward to the day that I’ll once again be able to play on the grass, so carefully captured here by Kevin Littleton on flickr.

Perhaps in my travels.

Doesn’t this look blissful? Flickr user Bernard-SD took this shot at Yosemite National Park. Summer is one of the best but also the most crowded times at our country’s national parks, so it’s refreshing to see a great nature shot with nary a human to clutter the view.

Bernard’s photo is great not only for the scenery but also because it’s nicely framed. I like how the lone hiking path cuts across the foreground, winding off into unknown. The tree on the right is also a nice counterpoint to the gorgeous waterfall on the upper left. Just imagine yourself hiking down this peaceful path, the vista of the park’s mountains looming in the distance.
