Drunk Man Tries to Hijack Turkish Airlines Flight

A man on a Turkish Airlines flight from the resort town of Antalya, Turkey to the Russian city of St. Petersburg threatened to blow up the plane unless it was diverted. The man, who appeared to be drunk, approached a flight attendant and handed her a note to give to the pilot: “I have a bomb. If you don’t take me in (the cockpit) I will blow it up,” As he stumbled toward the front of the plane, he was overpowered by passengers. No explosives were found despite his insistence that there was a bomb strapped on his body. He appeared so inebriated that passengers did not take him seriously.

Turkish journalists have reported that the man was an Uzbek national, but his identity and true nationality have not yet been confirmed. After he was subdued, the plane continued on to its destination, though Turkish Airlines officials briefly considered setting it down immediately as a precaution. There were 167 passengers on board the aircraft, an Airbus A-320.

Woman in New Zealand attempts to hijack a plane

It is not often you hear about women trying to hijack planes, but I guess it was bound to happen with the closing gap of gender opportunities.

As reported by Herald Sun, a 33-year-old New Zealand woman of Somali descent boarded a 19-seat plane headed from Blenheim to Christchurch earlier today and about ten minutes after take-off she demanded to be flown to Australia. She rushed into the cockpit and stabbed one pilot in the hand and the other in the foot, claiming she was going to detonate the two bombs she brought on board. She was subdued by the co-pilot as the twin-propeller plane came in to land at Christchurch, and arrested after landing.

Passengers on regional flights in New Zealand apparently do not have their carry-on luggage screened. That’s why she was able to smuggle a knife on to the plane. No bombs were found.

I feel bad for pilots these days, I really do.

California teen in custody after plane incident

The wire was buzzing this morning with the tale of a Los Angeles teenager who was arrested for plotting to hijack a flight and — I’m not joking here — crash it into a Hannah Montana concert in Lafayette, Louisiana. I swear I’m not making this up.

See for yourself: LA teen in custody after plane incident

The teen was pulled off of Southwest Airlines flight 284 — without incident — on Tuesday night with a bag full of handcuffs, rope and duct tape. How does a kid get through security with a bag of handcuffs? A search of his home back in California revealed a mock cockpit, but authorities are confident “his plan had a low probability of success.”

Update: The FBI is now dismissing reports that the teen planned to crash the plane into a Hannah Montana concert. (Thanks, Melinda!)
