Photo Of The Day: Zamora And Douro

Some photos of the day relate to current events or articles we’ve posted. Others, though, are posted just because they’re striking in some way. This shot, of the Douro River in Spain, was posted to the Gadling Flickr pool a few days ago. I keep coming back to it and hope it captivates some of you just as much.

Photo Of The Day: A View Of Mount Baker

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and therefore I have an affinity for any photos that combine mountains and water. No matter where you are in the region, be it Oregon, Washington or British Columbia, you’re bound to find a mountain view from a body of water, and the sight is just as striking every single time. In this photo, Flickr user James Wheeler takes us to the Fraser River in British Columbia, where we get an excellent shot of Mount Baker. As you can see, in this corner of the world it doesn’t always rain.

Photo Of The Day: Elephant Bath

Humans aren’t the only ones that need to clean up. As we see in today’s shot by Flickr user ladyexpat, even elephants like to have a scrub now and then. It’s a great candid shot of not just the elephants in action, but also the handlers, as they casually chat while standing on the animals’ backs.

Photo Of The Day: The Ganges River At Dawn

Sometimes, the most poignant travel imagery is captured before the destination has even woken up. Take, for instance, today’s Photo of the Day, taken by Flickr user Calvin Lee on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Later in the day, the river will be filled with pilgrims engaging in religious rituals, tourists taking photos of them and the hustlers that inevitably follow the tourists. But in this image, taken at dawn, you can practically hear the silence.

Photo of the Day: giant otter

Flickr user Max Waugh Photography was on a nature excursion in the Peruvian Amazon when he came upon this unique species of giant otter, popping its head above the glassy water surface. I love the photo’s close up details – the animal’s elongated neck, wiry whiskers and curious stare. With great nature shots like this one, it’s particularly important to get as close (as is safe) or zoomed in to your subject as possible.
