Tickets for the Nomading Film Festival in New York go on sale Friday

After a successful run this past June, the Nomading Film Festival is returning to New York this summer, June 23, 2012. Nomading Film Festival is an event that showcases stories caught on film during peoples’ travels, giving new talent a chance to share their stories and viewers a chance to travel all over the world without leaving Brooklyn.

The really early bird tickets will be sold at a very discounted price this Friday, November 11, 2011. Not only that, but travelers of all ages from all over the world can begin submitting their travel videos (must be under 15 minutes). Until April 30, 2012, submissions are only $10, and selected filmmakers will be notified by May 15, 2012. Prizes, such as trips, flights, and gear, are awarded in three categories:

  • The nomad I want to travel with
  • The most enlightening trip
  • Simply put, that trip makes me want to travel, now!

Video of the day: the best burger in Los Angeles

Even with the Grammys and the Oscars behind us now, it’s still safe to say that Los Angeles is a major travel destination. Especially during months that are just a little too cold for comfort in other parts of the world. Dave Pinke, a traveler and video-making cool guy from NYC, put this video together after one of his trips to L.A. Among his travels featured in this video is his search for the best burger in L.A. And, you know, that’s important information–according to me.

Want your art in the Guggenheim? Here’s your chance!

The Guggenheim and YouTube have teamed up to find the world’s most artistic short videos.

YouTube Play is a contest for Youtube videos that show something truly inventive and different. No fan vids or farting dogs need apply. Two hundred finalists will be judged by a panel of art experts and culled down to 20 to 25 videos that will be shown in a special exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York City. It will be the first of a biennial competition.

This will attract a lot of creative entries, especially by video artists and animators. Wouldn’t it be nice if some of the finalists showed the wide world in all its glory? A good travel video such as this one of The Amber Fort in Rajasthan can hold its own against more consciously artistic works. Not only are there some beautiful shots, but the video subtly explores the relationship between heritage and tourism.

So get the cameras rolling and make a video that deserves to be shown in one of the world’s leading modern art museums. But hurry up, submissions close July 31!

Gadlinks for Monday 6.15.09

Happy Monday! Glorious summer is in full swing across the nation. This means a lot of things — namely, summer blockbusters! I haven’t been much of a moviegoer recently, but with Tranformers 2 and the new Harry Potter coming out, you bet I’ll be found munching on some hurricane popcorn at Ward Theaters and enjoying a flick + air conditioning.

Travel poem of Tuscany

This is National Poetry Month. With that in mind, here’s an idea for combining visual images gathered from a travel experience with poetry and music. The female narrator, I’m assuming, is the person who took the photos and wrote the poem. According to the description, this video was inspired by the writer’s recent trip to Tuscany.

The words reflect the images of this region of Italy, and the music helps capture the mood of the traveler’s experiences. The result is a sensory experience for the viewer. I particularly liked the contrasting textures in the blend of architecture, scenery and food. Very cool idea.
