Video Of The Day: Pong Traffic Light

What do you do when you’re waiting to cross the street? Do you people watch, run through your mental to-do list, or count cars? If you’re in Germany, you might get to play a little Pong while you wait for the little green man to flash. A recent video on YouTube uploaded by Caburaska shows a German demonstrating the Pong traffic light game, played with a willing stranger (and potential love connection, judging from his face after their high-five) at a busy intersection. According to the video comments, the game might be just part of a project rather than a city-sanctioned installation, but it’s still pretty cool. I’d like to see Frogger at stoplights next.

Seen any cool games on your travels? Post a video link below or on the Gadling Facebook page for a future Video of the Day.

Virtuous bicycling is one way to help the environment

Even though gas prices have dropped considerably (a gallon of gas is $1.77 not far from my house) conserving energy and protecting the environment is still a concern. In Washington, D.C., bicycle commuting has grown considerably as a viable way to get from Point A to Point B.

Anyone living in an urban environment knows that bicycle commuting can create traffic problems even though they solve many problems. This video documentary created for Round 2 of the YouTube and Pulitzer Center “Project:Report” competition looks at the issues about bicycle commuting in D.C, but they could be applied to any city.

When I watched the video, it did give me the feeling that I really ought to bicycle to places more than I do. Since I never bicycle anywhere, an increase wouldn’t take much. When I lived in Denmark, riding a bicycle was how I got to the train station in the town where I lived–even in the winter. It was a sane way to live.

You Tube Becomes New (Zealand) Tube

When you’re a tiny country of just 4 million people at the bottom of the world, you need to be innovative in your marketing activities. We’ve already reported on Air New Zealand’s innovative gay-themed flight and high-altitude fashion show.

Now Tourism New Zealand have set up the world’s first You Tube channel dedicated to a single country. It’s a follow on from the deal earlier this week when the team behind the Pure NZ marketing campaign took over all the home page advertising on You Tube for the entire day of September 18.

Check out the channel for loads of NZ-themed content about the country I’m proud (and very lucky) to call home.

The pic is of dusk under the Kaikoura Ranges in New Zealand’s South Island.
