Antarctica is one of those destinations that has an allure of exoticness to it. It is a place
that most tourists, even hard-core ones, will likely never visit. Most people still think of it as this forbidding
world of ice and horrible cold that could only appeal to brave adventurers like Ernest Shackleton. But the reality is
that these days it is pretty easy to get to Antarctica. Sure, depending on how you do it, you might need a lot of cash
to get there, but the creative-minded can hop a navy boat from Chile
(as I did), or find other cheap ways of
getting there.
If you want some solid information on how to get to Antarctica on the cheap, you might check out
Carly Blatt’s piece on GoNomad. She explains how
to get there cheaply and a bit about what to do once you’re there. (Side note: I once wrote that being in Antarctica
for the first time is a lot like landing on the moon. It took an incredible journey to reach it, you’re amazed you’re
there, but then you look around and wonder, what am I supposed to do now?) That said, you’ll never regret going if you
choose to make the trip. And as Blatt points out, you CAN do it cheaply if you plan well.
