The odd things that people follow.
Here is a page with a list of all the ways that subways
around the world talk to you. Or perhaps talk is the wrong word. That is, in Boston the doors apparently make a
“ding ding” or “ding dong” sound. Kinda friendly. Gets the point across. In New York our subways say “Stand clear
of the closing doors, please.” It’s a male voice, kind, but assertive. Not really a New York voice (which would
say: Hey, get your dumb ass away from the door! Sometimes the subway drivers say this.) The ones in Milan
offer a somewhat aloof, Buzz, as they do in Paris…though probably even more aloof. In Berlin, you hear
“Einsteigen, bitte!” or “Zurückbleiben, bitte!” which, no matter how quietly/kindly spoken still
sounds like an order from someone with a rifle who means to use it should you disobey.
The list goes on…check it out here.
