Here’s a super budget and primitive travel stay if you find yourself anywhere near
Idaho’s Salmon
River area. Richard Zimmerman, a.k.a.
“Dugout Dick” is taking his hand in the travel and tourism
industry after several years of construction by offering his
cave dwellings as accommodation for five
bucks a night. If you can handle the lack of amenities; no TV, no microwave oven, no coffee pot, no swimming and of
course no electricity and wish to stay longer $25 will get you the cave for the month. Only two European
tourist, one from Spain and one from England have stayed in the caves and according to Zimmerman, didn’t take well
to life underground.
Things can’t be all so bad if the 89 year-old retiree dwells in the caves himself and even with the lack of so many
other amenities the caves do include mattresses and wood stoves. For $5 bucks a night I’d give it a go and
if anything it sounds like a lifetime of work on Zimmerman’s part that went into the digging out the caves.
