California has so much going for it, you could make a list a mile long of all the great places to see and stay. But
most people, when they think of California vacations tend to stop at the Bay Area. You don’t hear a ton about the
places North of the Bay Area, but I’ve got a great recommendation for you. The town of
Mendocino is located about three hours north of San Francisco and it is one of
the loveliest places you will ever see. The rocky coastline gets pounded by the Pacific and makes for postcard perfect
vistas. The town itself is small and quiet, but picturesque, and is loaded with shops, bars and restaurants. An, of
course, its right close to wine country, so you can perch yourself on the porch of your hotel, sip a chilled
Chardonnay, and take in one of the finest views in the country.
As a place to stay, I recommend the Stevenswood Lodge. Although it is pushed
back from the water a short distance, it is nestled in the woods just outside of town, and comes compete with a spa,
spacious rooms and a Zagat-rated restaurant. It is top notch.
Of course, the best time to visit Mendocino is the fall or summer, so consider it as a destination next year, or a
great last minute weekend getaway.
