Halloween is past, but it seems there are still plenty of people out there who can’t get enough horror in their
lives. This story in The Guardian
is all about Dark Tourism. And no, that’s not turning off the lights in your hotel or wearing black when you tootle
around Europe. Dark tourism is what appears to be another “new” trend in travel whereby people head to sites of death
and destruction. You might remember the recent book by one of my favorite contemporary commentators, Sarah Vowell. A
book called
Assassination
Vacation. Has a pretty nice ring, don’t it? I’ve actually been listening to the book and quite enjoy it, but the
Dark Tourism concept goes beyond visiting the spot where Honest Abe got one in the back of the head. It’s also about
people who travel to Ground Zero and visit graveyards. Hey, if that’s your
thing, I suppose that’s cool. Just try not to get to friendly with the dead. Then people will REALLY think you’re
weird.
