Angel Falls in
Venezuela. The local
indians call the falls Kerepakupai-merú but the name used now Angel Falls came from an American bush pilot and
gold-hunting adventurer Jimmy Angel, who (PC alert!) “discovered” the falls in 1937. Trivia Pursuit factoid: The
falls are the tallest in the world. The waters fall freely 2,648 feet, almost half a mile, and reach the bottom of the
valley as a misty spray that gathers into a small creek which eventually finds its way into the north-bound Churun
River.
Apparently, and I have never done this, never ever ever, it is
actually LEGAL to do BASE jumps from the falls. So if your idea
of a good time is throwing yourself off the top of the tallest falls in the world, well, this may be your kind of
place.
