A friend of mine reminded me the other day how
Smithsonian Magazine used to do these really great
travel stories. So I clicked around and found the site, and while many of the stories there are a bit older, I was
impressed by how good they are. I urge you to check them out. There’s amazing photos, video, little historical
backgrounders. Sad they don’t seem to be doing these anymore.
First, check out this one about
Albatrosses on Midway Island. Midway was the site of a majopr WWII battle, and the island was nearly torn apart.
But today there is a thriving ecosystem there including huge albatrosses, sea turtles and frigate birds.
Then I thought this one about
riding camels in Australia was great. On a trip to see Ayers Rock, this group of dromedarians (is this a word? If not,
should be.) gets a first-hand gliimpse of the beauty and desolation of the outback.
Superb stuff.
