Getting Lei’d in Hawai’i is a big deal. People do it almost everywhere. From the time you get off the
plane, to attending a local luau, proms, and almost any function worth
celebrating – expect to get lei’d. My graduation ceremony from high school was crazy. I had lei’s draped
around my neck and piled nose high. This was nothing compared to some of the locals who couldn’t even see due to the
number of lei’s they were given. You could tell their friends and families had spent weeks preparing for the
occasion, making lei’s built of candy, coins, plumeria and some even used small flotation devices for lei. Just as
getting lei’d on the islands seems rather easy making a lei of your own isn’t difficult either.
The Hawaiian Luau web site is a great place to start for
lei-making basics. If you’ve ever beaded a piece of
jewelry you’ll find the process of crafting your beautiful flower creation quite similar. If you use fresh
hand picked flowers for your lei make sure you store it in the refrigerator in a moistened plastic bag until ready for
use.
