Daily deal – Acer Aspire One ultra portable computer $289.99

My daily deal for today is for another of those nifty little “Netbook” computers. This time, it’s the Acer Aspire One AOA110-1955.

The pint sized computer features an Intel Atom processor, running at a comfortable 1.6GHz. Also inside the machine is 512MB of memory and an 8GB solid state drive. Connectivity to the Internet is accomplished using a wired connection, or with the built in Wi-Fi interface.

Before you click “I want one”, I want to make sure you understand that this model of the Aspire One does not come with Windows. Instead, you get a special flavor of Linux. The Linux installation contains all the applications the average user might need; including OpenOffice and Mozilla Firefox.

The Acer Aspire One comes complete with a 3-cell battery pack, an AC adapter and a carrying pouch.

This machine normally retails for $329, but for just one day, you’ll be able to buy one from Woot.com for just $289.99 (+$5 shipping).

Remember, Woot.com deals are only available for one day, or until they run out of stock, so don’t wait too long.

The case of the traveling gnome finally solved!

Murphy, a 8 lb gnome, returned to the doorsteps of an old Gloucester couple with a bag of photos and immigration stamps hailing from Mozambique, New Zealand, Singapore, Laos, Australia, and some dozen other countries. In an attached note, he wrote:

Hello! First of all I feel I should explain my prolonged absence. A gnome’s life is full of time for reflection, and whilst surveying your garden one summer morning, I began to get itchy feet.

I came to the conclusion that the world is a big place and there is more to life than watching the daily commuter traffic, and allowing passing cats to urinate on you. So I decided to free myself from the doldrums of the Shire and seek adventure. My travels have taken me across three continents, 12 countries and more time zones than I can possibly remember.

There have been high points, low points, and positively terrifying points. But I have survived – small thanks to the companion with whom I have shared all these moments.

Now the caper has been solved. Read more about the 22-year-old law grad who took Murphy on a worldwide tour.

Photo of the Day (11.01.08)

I’m in Glacier National Park this weekend, so this photo taken by Don&Colleen is fitting. I love the mountains in the background and their distinct outline against the sky and clouds. Fortunately, I chose this one before taking off, meaning that today I get to fully enjoy the beauty captured in the photo –without having to go online — and maybe even take some of my own!

Want to have your own photo featured on Photo of the Day? Submit it to the Gadling Flickr pool for consideration.

A cheetah gets loose on Delta flight

So on Thursday a Delta ground crew member in Atlanta opens the cargo door of a jetliner that had just arrived from Portland, Oregon, only to find that a cheetah — yes, a cheetah — was running loose among the suitcases and other luggage.

The Associated Press reports that two cheetahs were being flown to Atlanta in the cargo area of a normal passenger flight. One managed to escape from its cage.

What happened? The airline called experts at the Atlanta zoo, who arrived on scene and tranquilized both cats before taking them back to the zoo.

No damage — to man or to luggage — was reported.

Gadling Take FIVE Week of Oct. 25–Oct. 31

Wow! Here it is Halloween and October is almost over. Whew! What a month.

The pace at Gadling has continued to pick up. Perhaps you’ve noticed that Gadling blogger Karen Walerond has returned. She’s our resident camera and photographer expert, so stay tuned for tips on how you can make your camera work sing.

Also, there’s yet another series to add to our other mini-series. Aaron is gracing us with a Travel Trivia quiz each Tuesday. That Aaron is one smart guy.

Hopefully, you’ve been following Gadling’s series “Catching the Travel Bug” about our experiences when we’ve caught some illness when on the road. Also, this week there were two more “Sounds of Travel” offerings. This is the series where we’re sharing the songs that have moved us when we’ve ventured from home.

This week, who hasn’t noticed the flurry of U.S. election related news? By the next time I write next week’s Gadling TAKE FIVE roundup, we should know who our next president will be. We’ve had our own musings about the candidates and some oddball details.

Yes, that’s only four, so here’s one more from one of my favorite topics, New York City. Jeremy has once again given us a blueprint for discovering the gems we may not have heard of before. I’m so heading to Roosevelt Avenue in Queens for dip into Latin American culture the next time I am in New York.

By, the way, have a wonderful Trick or Treat or party, or whatever you’re up to. Hopefully, your fall day is as gorgeous as mine is.
