Those Dervishes Are….Whirling!

Anyone here ever seen the movie Baraka? You
know that great scene, shot so perfectly, of the whirling
dervishes
in Turkey? Ever
since I watched that scene, I’ve wanted to see Dervishes whirl.
But how can one do this? Is there a particular neighborhood in New York or
elsewhere where you can go and watch Dervishes whirl…perhaps right in
the street like a scene from Fame? Or would that be more like Oliver? No matter. Turns out
to see whirling
Dervishes
…and all other types of Dervishes (standing Dervishes, crouching Dervishes, hop-scotching Dervishes) you
need to travel to Turkey. And coming very soon, from December 10 to 17 in Konya, Turkey, these members of a
special Sufi order whill be whirling together in a wheeklong festival. To get there, you’ll have to fly to Ankara, and
then make the 220 mile trip from the Turkish capitol.
