For those of you, like myself, who received an email a few weeks ago claiming that Mars will be closer to earth today than ever before, and thus amazingly prominent in the sky, you are about to be disappointed: This is merely a hoax.
I fell for it briefly, emailing it to a friend who is getting married today as a cool thing to be happening on her big day. But alas, it will not happen at all.
I don’t find it a particularly funny hoax. Perhaps the creator wanted to walk around at night laughing at everyone looking up to the skies. I frankly don’t know. I am disappointed, however. I’m just not sure what disappoints me the most–the realization that I won’t be able to see Mars wildly aglow, the lameness of the hoax, or the fact that I fell for it.
