Today’s photo of the day comes from a cool new magazine I found called Travel Outward. It is of some kids playing in the tidal flats in the Bahamas. (In Homer’s voice:) Hmmm, Bahamas.
Spring Break Ideas
Well, for some of us spring break is nothing more than a memory of times spent long ago during a period when your most pressing cares were which brand of beer to pour into the gaping mouth of a beer bong funnel (Budweiser always seemed to go down the best). For others, that memory is alive and well. I’m talking about those fortunate folk who are perhaps planning this very minute for imminent debauchery. Ah, youth. If you fall into this category, you can’t go wrong checking out the Boston Globe’s spring break special. There are flight specials, ideas on how best to crash after a day of drinking, and a top ten list of best spots to hang with your friends (number ten: the Bahamas, number one: Panama City, FL).
Bullish on the Bahamas
There are quite a few places I can imagine being right now that would make me happier than New York City. A cold front is rolling in and snow is said to be on its way. So it’s hard to be sitting here and come across an article like this one on paddling in the Bahamas. Oh, man, how great would that be?
The Exumas are an island group that are part of the Bahamas. They like about 220 miles southeast of Miami and make up an archipelago of boating bliss consists of 365 little cays. The waters are aquamarine, the sun shines down brightly almost all the time, and the paddling is said to be wondrous. The article is a bit long, but you’ll read it and, paraphrasing Pink Floyd, Wish you were there.
Swimming With the Fishes
The New York Times runs a nice piece today about quick scuba getaways. You know, scoot out on Thursday night, dive all weekend and then back in the office Monday or Tuesday. Turns out the phenomenon is on the rise, the old scuba in-out-in-out, as it were, my droogies. Among the groups offering trips are the PADI Travel Network, who organizes dive weekends to Cozumel (from whence a friend of mine just returned and said it was superb, so long as you stay away from the tourist hell of Cancun), the Caymans, to Key Largo and Key West. It seems the Bahamas are also big, with Nassau and Freeport on the list.
Generally, this means three solid days of diving, and so long as you give yourself time to decompress (literally) before you fly, you’re back for the Monday morning staff meeting. Beats trudging over ice-covered sidewalks along 5th Avenue.
