Peter Hughes Liveaboard disaster relatives interviewed

It’s old news but it’s still worth reading about. On October 8th, 2001 the Peter Hughes Liveaboard “Wave Dancer” was in Belize docked in a protected bay. At the urging of the local government, as Hurricane Iris blew into Belize, numerous liveaboard boats moved into the protected waters to ride out the storm. Unfortunately, the Wave Dancer flipped over in the storm, resulting in the death of 17 divers and three crew members. Virtually all of the relatives sued.

Coppola’s Cabin in the Jungle

My guess is it probably offers better accomodations than Colonel Kurtz’ bamboo prisoner cell (remember, where Marlon Brando dropped Chef’s head into Martin Sheen’s lap?). Francis Ford Coppola’s Blancaneaux Lodge is nestled in the jungles of Belize in Central America. He found the place, so he says, when he was hunting for locations to film Apocalypse Now, and came back to buy a chunk of it. Now it is a world-class lodge called the Blancaneaux Lodge, and offers sybaritic accomodations for those who also want some jungle adventure with their champagne.

Mental Wanderings

The folks over at Mental Wanderings do indeed wander. Check out this web log that chronicles, in parts, Will and Jen’s ten months of travel in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, the US, and Europe. They have a striking photo section on their site, categorised by location – and while not mental, exactly, there are some “off the beaten path” destinations in there, including small towns in Guatamala.

They’re also building a personal guidebook to some of their favourite places, and while restaurants in Helena, MT and and arcades in Portland, OR may not be the ultimate in adventure travel, it’s nice to know where to eat (or get in a good game of Frogger when you’re on the road.
