Poor Man’s Paradise

You’ve got my first hand experience on this one.  Poor
Man’s Paradise
is located on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica and has accommodation at a very decent
price.  They offer both cabins which are tucked further inside the grounds and tents located right on
the beach for camping under the stars. (Go for the tents.)

Having to take a hour plus boat ride on the Sierpe River and then Pacific Ocean, the area is untouched by roads
keeping the natural beauty intact.  The Amaya family is extremely welcoming and they offer a wide
range of activities.  Guided tours to the National Geographic recommended Parque Nacional Corcovado, deep sea
fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and bird watching are just among the few.  If you are looking to find peace and
paradise it is guaranteed to be found here.

When in Rome, Hike as the Romans Do

The NY Times runs

a piece
on what to in (or nearby) Rome after you’ve scampered over the sites, had your fill of Chianti and are
ready to burn some calories. Turns out there are some fine hiking and wandering sites around the big city that are
easily accessible if you have the gumption to try to find them.

Galen Rowell was really one of the all-time masters of the outdoor photographic image. He and his wife tragically
died in a plan crash in California a few years back, but his images are still around and can be seen at his
Mountain Light studio.

Stay in a Tipi Village

I’ve been looking for really cool vacations that feature camping out the way the Native American’s
did by sleeping in a tipi.  Sure I could pitch one in my own backyard if I wanted
to, but that’s no fun.  What does sound like fun is camping out in a tipi village at
Skyland Ranch which is 30 miles east of Everett,
Washington.  Located near the Snoqualmie National Forest, perfect for riding and hiking, you experience the
wilderness full on as well as eating native foods and learning native games and skills.  I figured it might be
something others would be interested in too and they’ve got some pretty good trip details on the site.
