Photo Of The Day: Extraterrestrial Highway

Labor Day weekend is coming up quickly, and although it’s forecast to be the busiest in five years, that won’t stop an estimated 34.1 million people from packing up and heading out… somewhere. Even though the main roads might not be as clear as this shot of the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada, you may find solace in calmer, slower back roads. So, load up the car, map your route on the GPS, and spin the steering wheel whichever way the talking lady in the dashboard tells you to go. But maybe ask her for an alternate route before you set off.

Travel Back Thursday: USAir, Circa 1992

Thursdays mark a new rendition of our Photo of the Day on Gadling. We’ll be traveling back in time to feature interesting memories of years past. Today, we go back about 20 years (can you believe 1992 was so long ago?) with this photo of a USAir jet being loaded with meals for to-be-boarded passengers. Photographer Hunter Desportes reminisces, “Ah, the good old days of free food on domestic flights.”

Our friends at AOL Travel just published the latest installment of their Best Beach Cruiser Rides, and it focuses on an 8½-mile journey from Santa Monica to Venice Beach in California. The Santa Monica Pier offers a pretty, scenic view of the Pacific Ocean during the day. But at night? The setting sun combines with bright paint schemes and flashy neon lights to create a feast for the eyes.
