Video of the Day: Rihanna prefers a California King Bed

When you stay at a hotel, one of the most important things is the quality of the bed. No one wants to sleep in a twin bed. Who needs two queens if you’re just there with your wife? And, if you’re tall, you’ll want the extra length provided by a California king bed. Apparently, Rihanna feels very strongly about needing 86″ of length in her mattress, because she wrote a whole song about it.

Granted, we have no idea what the hell is happening in this video and we’re certain that her hair color does not occur in nature, but it sure is a lengthy bed. And, at the end of the day – literally – isn’t that all that matters?

Photo of the Day: Naples, Italy

I took our photo of the day this week in Naples, Italy where we stopped for the day to go through the ruins of Pompeii. Pompeii is possibly the most famous excavation in the world, drawing 15,000 people every day, almost as many as lived there before the horrifying eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

Read all about it in A day in Naples, Italy.

Photo of the day – Lyon metro

Every now and then an image shows up in the Flickr Gadling group pool that knocks my socks off. This is one such photo, snapped by Flickr user baby_mongster. It depicts a short woman in a light raincoat against the straight-forward 1970s modernism of the Lyon metro system. This composition, reduced to black-and-white simplicity, is starkly beautiful.

A modern setting that also looks old-fashioned is doubly appealing. It says: Here is the future, and it looks somewhat old.

Got an image that depicts something modern that is no longer all that shiny? We thought so. Submit it to the Gadling group pool on Flickr. If we dig the image we’ll select it for a future Photo of the Day.

Photo of the day – snail’s pace

Today’s Photo of the Day, shot near Giverny, France by Flickr user Bryson Gilbert, forces a reorientation of space and perspective. This snail is traveling with intent, possibly to get away from a human with what look like very large feet, and it is extremely tiny.

Among other observations forced by this image: snails are not pretty. The photographer’s laser-like focus on the snail reminds us of this.

Got an image you’d like to see as a future Photo of the Day here on Gadling? Add it to Flickr’s Gadling Group Pool and we might just select it.

And remember to enable downloading! If you don’t do so, we won’t be able to resize your image and in turn publish it.

Video of the Day – Journey through Asia

If you have 4 minutes to spare and a virtual tour through Thailand, Cambodia, & Vietnam strikes your fancy; sit back and enjoy this beautiful montage from filmmaker Ivan Vania.

Shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and set to a soundtrack by Yann Tiersen (composer of the score for Amélie), it’s an incredibly vivid depiction of the boat rides, temples, smiles, and landscapes that many travelers to Southeast Asia are familiar with. Ivan does a great job of mixing wide angle shots of the environment with close ups that capture the detail of the locations and the expressions of the people he encountered, which adds to the video’s realism and authenticity.
