Photo of the Day – Lisbon at dusk

The city of Lisbon is dominated by its hills. It can make getting around this Portuguese capital an interesting experience (tip: make sure to try out one of the city’s elevators). But rest assured, once you make it to the top, you’ll be treated to some of Europe’s most amazing views. Today’s photo, by Flickr user t3mujin, offers a typical example, taken at dusk. I love the warm glow of the city’s street lights, coming to life as the day slowly fades to dusk, Lisbon’s picturesque harbor visible off in the distance.

Taken any great photos during your recent travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day: Approaching storm on Coogee Beach, Australia

This sky is my favorite kind: the sun is still in one part of it, brightening everything up, but the impending blackness of the clouds means trouble is brewing. Not that that is any bother for the sunbathers, who are catching a few last-minute rains before what has to be some serious rain. Thanks to Flickr user ssabedin, who shared this via Gadling’s pool.

Photo of the day – Amusement park Americana

Everyone loves an amusement park ride, especially one with pretty lights, right? Flickr user ohad* snapped this appealing nighttime image of a local amusement park ride in Delray Beach, Florida. He manages to create an image that captures a reconizable, summery piece of Americana, one especially welcome during these cold winter days. In fact, ohad* took this photograph on New Year’s Eve, but the summery feeling is there nonetheless. We need reminders, here in the frigid Northeastern US, of how it feels to stroll around at night in a t-shirt and jeans.

Got an image of a warm-weather nighttime carnival you’d like to share with the Gadling readership? Upload it to the Gadling pool on Flickr and it might very well end up as a future Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day – Sierra Nevada

If the Sierra Nevada mountains warm your heart, welcome to the club. This voluminous range houses Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft.), the highest point in the contiguous United States. The Sierra also features Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, three parks, 20 wilderness areas, and two national monuments. Covering land in both California and Nevada, the Sierras are a much-loved destination for those traveling in the West–especially those who are into winter sports.

Heavy snowfall in the area this winter has translated to happy skiers and snowboarders. And while those on the slopes have been having a blast, the recent snowfall has simultaneously replenished nearby reservoirs. Wondering what ‘heavy snowfall‘ means? Nearly 20 feet of snow in the combined months of November and December.

This shot was snapped by a creative photographer out of California, Hilary Hulteen. If you’d like to submit your best photos for our Photo of the Day, just upload them to the Gadling Flickr Pool.

Photo of the Day – Tour d’Afrique

The 2011 Tour d’Afrique is officially underway! Just three days ago, more than 120 cyclists set off from Cairo, Egypt on a four month, 7,375 mile race across the world’s most exotic and alluring continent. The competitors will pedal through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia before aiming to arrive in Cape Town, South Africa on May 14th.

If you have the urge to drop everything and join them, you can sign up to complete one of the eight partial sections ranging in distance between 1000km and 2000km.

Today’s Photo of the Day from localsurfer isn’t of the Tour d’Afrique, but I think it’s a great illustration of how important bicycles are as a mode of transporation and heavy lifting throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. So much in fact, that a series of social enterprises are now popping up to help local African entreprenuers by building and loaning inexpensive but durable bikes.

If you have a snapshot of some heavy lifting or local ingenuity, we want to see it! Submit it to our Gadling Flickr group and it could be our next Photo of the Day!
