Photo of the Day (1.9.11)

If taken poorly, sunset photos can be quite boring. But sometimes you find an exception, like this stunning shot by Flickr user justindelaney. What initially caught my eye was that fiery red color, in the middle. To me it’s the epitome of the type of dry, searing dusty day you’d expect to find in Texas, where this shot was taken. You can almost feel the heat of the day evaporating, sandwiched between two layers of inky-black sky. I can imagine myself sitting on a porch in front of this scene, kicking back with a frosty bottle of Shiner Bock, watching the day slip into the cool embrace of evening.

Have any great travel photos you’d like to share with the world? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

An iceberg seems like the perfect image for today, at least from where I’m sitting in Brooklyn, NY, as I watch snow flurries float down every which way against the backdrop of a brick building. It’s winter, basically. Why fight it? This gorgeously detailed image of an Antarctic iceberg was taken by Gadling Flickr pool user SummitVoice1.

Got an image that showcases the majesty of cold landscapes? What about a pic or two that captures the misery of winter? Download ’em to the Gadling Flickr pool. You might just luck out and see your photo crop up as a future Photo of the Day.

Part of the joy of travel is trying new foods, like wild boar spare ribs or roasted chestnuts. Or barbequed monitor lizard. Flickr user LadyExpat spotted these enterprising young men in Ubud, Bali, taking the unfortunate reptile to market where it is apparently in hot demand for its skin and meat. Perhaps Mike Barish can tell us if it tastes like chicken when he returns from Bali.

Why not add your exotic food pictures to the Gadling Flickr pool? If they look tasty, we might choose one for a future Photo of the Day.

I love that people still send postcards. With email, Facebook, Skype, texting and every other form of communication making the world smaller, good old-fashioned letter writing has been replaced by instantaneous shorthand gibberish. It’s nice to know that, know matter where you are or how remote your location, that, if you slap some postage on a piece of paper, it will eventually arrive at its destination to bring a smile to its recipient.

That’s why I was so pleased when I saw Flickr user stefantrego’s photo of a mail boat in Old Forge, New York. It’s reassuring to know that the mail will make it across bodies of water…at least once the snow melts.

Taken any photos of mail carriers during your travels? Or maybe just some fantastic pictures of the people, places and things you’ve encountered along the way? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

I like the optimism of today’s photo, courtesy of Flickr user JasonBechtel. It’s a great way to kick off a brand new year. Jason snapped this photo out in South Dakota – a land you can imagine inhabited by limitless blue skies and crisp grasslands, gently swaying in the breeze. What really pulls the image together is the framing of the wide-open gate. The open door seems to beckon the viewer forward, inviting them into a land of new opportunities, adventure and promise: the perfect sentiment for all any travelers hoping to start the new year off right. Bring it on!
