Photo of the Day: People Mover, People Moving

They’re a bit quirky. They’re an unconventional way to move mass quantities of people from one airport terminal to another. Yet Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) still relies on these “people movers” to shuttle passengers around some parts of the property.

And speaking of people moving, I’d like to take a minute to introduce myself. I’m Jake, one of the editors of both AOL Travel and Gadling — and starting today, I’ll be curating Gadling’s Photo of the Day and Video of the Day posts. Our editorial staff is based in Dulles Airport’s backyard, just a few miles from where this photo was taken.

Warm days, balmy nights and time off. Summer is prime time for getting outdoors and exploring. Backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, walking, running; whatever your sport of choice, this is the season to be doing it.

Need some inspiration? This photo taken on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters by Flickr user Adam Baker should do it. Sunset on still water from your seat in a boat – what could be better?

“If you’ve been following my photos, by now you know I am a big fan of Norther Yunnan in China. This photo is of the water system in Yubeng. These pipes bring fresh … cold water to the houses in the small town.”

Photo Of The Day: The Hills In Arizona

Just outside of Prescott, Arizona is Williamson Valley, a quite desolate area where it’s quite easy to find yourself come across a herd of buffalo, within the limits of their farm of course. This hillside sunrise, seen through immaculately kept trees, is in great company amongst Arizona’s other phenomenal natural wonders. Michael Wilson, a Prescott resident, took this stunning photo and has plenty more on his website. While summer in Arizona is not likely to be most people’s ideal destination, its beautiful landscapes like these that draw many of us into the desert.

Photo Of The Day: Manhattan Skyline

Tomorrow evening in New York City, you can witness a twice-a-year phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge, when the sunset perfectly aligns with the city’s grid and makes the streets glow. Manhattan already has one of the most photogenic skylines in the world, as demonstrated by this postcard-perfect shot by Flickr user James Adamson. His shot of the Empire State Building (still lit in holiday colors) in early January, when the winter evening light shows a different kind of beauty than the summer sunset, a little colder but just as magical.
