Photo of the Day (07.05.10)

You don’t need fireworks to color the sky. Sometimes Mother Nature does it for you. Whether it’s an epic storm rolling through, a breathtaking sunset or just the coming apocalypse, the sky can take on all sorts of crazy hues.

Flickr user Chris Maki captured this photograph of a pretty fantastic storm heading over the Rocky Mountains that made the sky more colorful than the suits at the Player’s Ball. It’s ominous, terrifying and just plain beautiful. Fireworks are awesome, but a good thunderstorm can give you the same goosebumps. Play Neil Diamond’s “America,” and you’re in business.

Happy birthday, America. What better way to celebrate this great day than with some fireworks? While we’ve seen plenty of stellar fireworks photos over the years, we’ve got to hand it to Flickr user ohad*, who captured this quirky shot during a visit to Delray Beach, Florida. True, the fireworks in question were for New Year’s. But no matter, the feel of the image is great – the slow shutter speed makes this burst look like it was some kind of glowing palm tree.

Take any great fireworks shots during this year’s holiday weekend? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

A Seattle morning like this equals a guessing game for its residents: is it going to be sunny today? Do I dare leave the house without my raincoat? It’s probably better to be safe than sorry, as Flickr user Andy Bokanev notes: five minutes after he captured this scene he could no longer see the city for all the fog.

I like when people argue over who would win in a race between the Flash and Superman. Not that I’m a comic book geek, but it’s always a fun debate. It sure beats listening to people drone on about politics or religion. So, the Flash is super fast. But Superman is faster than a speeding bullet. Would it have to be a foot race? What if they use scooters? Or maybe old-school roller skates? What has most intrigued me, though, is the thought of those two superheroes on bicycles. You never see any superheroes on bicycles. Probably because no one ever taught them how to ride one. That’s sad.

However, if the Flash could ride a bike, I imagine he would look much like the guy in this picture taken by Flickr user jrodmanjr in Shanghai. Streaks of red and yellow with some sort of sleek costume modification. I still think Batman is cooler than both of them though.

Spied any superheroes during your travels? Or maybe you just have some epic travel photos? Upload your pictures to our Flickr pool and we might choose one to feature as a Photo of the Day.

Vietnam’s Halong Bay is natural oddity unlike anything on earth. Huge limestone rock formations surge from the Vietnam’s coast like looming sea monsters, lending the landscape an unforgettable visual appeal. Flickr user andreakw has put Halong Bay’s unique rock formations to good use in today’s photo. The darkened outlines of limestone float mysteriously upon the horizon like some vanishing dream; a fleeting memory soon to vanish in our subconscious.
