Photo of the Day (6.13.10)

Well doesn’t this look refreshing? Flickr user AlphaTangoBravo / Adam Baker caught this moment of bliss during a recent hiking trip along the border of Arizona and Utah. When you’ve been hiking all day under the heat of an unrelenting sun, this is apparently what happens – you find a nearby stream to cool off. I love the pose – the figure in the water seems to be enjoying a serious moment of refreshment. The figure is complemented by the vertical portrait-style framing of the shot. He seems to be looking up to the heavens as if to say “thanks.”

Taken any great photos taken during your travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

I look at this photo and I think, “ruh-roh.” Besides the fact that the plane is facing the same direction a similar plane was faced in a recent nightmare of mine (I mean come, sign people. What the H happened with this one?), I also really like that the plane and the arrow are facing different directions. It gives the impression of a person with their arms crossed, pointing in opposite ways in an Alice-in-Wonderland sort of way.

Have any photos that bring to mind traveling nightmares? Maybe don’t post them to Gadling’s Flickr pool. Okay, okay, just kidding… post any and all of your travel photos — we might select one for our Photo of the Day feature!

Maybe it’s in memory of Dennis Hopper, maybe it’s my new found fascination with China, or maybe it’s that I just think motorcycles are downright sexy – whatever the reason, today’s Photo of the Day seems to capture a moment I can’t refuse.

This cool ride was captured by jrodmanjr and is named ‘easy rider’ (maybe, again, in honor of Hopper, or maybe because the man on the bike makes it look so easy). The photo was captioned “Motorcyles ruled the road in China”, and even on a vintage bike this one, there’s something compelling about this ride.

Have a shot with a certain amount of sex appeal? Upload it to our Flickr pool and we may choose it as a feature in our Photo of the Day.

Today’s Photo of the Day is a dramatic shot of the Yosemite Valley and ever-famous Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. It’s worth taking a look at the full size version of this photo to get the full impact of the detailed rock faces that are enhanced by the desaturation in the photo.

It’s a shot that’s been captured many times, but mikeyu1402 certainly added a new perspective to a familiar scene with some creative post-processing. Nice work Mike! Do you have a photo of a famous site with your own personal spin on it? Submit it to our Flickr pool and check in to see if we pick it as our Photo of the Day!

People like to gripe about airplane food. It’s been fodder for comedians (not all of them funny) for years. People complain about how it tastes. They bitch about it being too hot or too cold. It’s chewy. It’s difficult to cut with plastic cutlery. And, now, it just plain costs too much since airlines have stopped serving free meals. Oddly, though, I love airplane food. I enjoy how compartmentalized it is. How I’m eating a full meal nearly six miles above the surface of the Earth. How I get to put a huge chunk of cheese on one tiny cracker. That’s why I love this picture by Flickr user andreakw. There’s no judgment here. No hacky jokes about airplane food. Just a simple meal served six miles above the surface of the Earth. And, perhaps alarmingly, no chunks of cheese.

Why not share your favorite memories of airplane meals in the comments below?
