Photo of the Day (5.16.2010)

Street vendors fascinate me. Having grown up in a place where I was surrounded by gigantic shopping malls and cavernous grocery stores, it was surprising to discover on my travels such an intimate relationship between buyer and seller. Perhaps that’s why Flickr user don.wright’s image caught my eye today. It’s a great capture of one of Vietnam’s many street sellers. I like how the vendor’s conical hat mirrors the shape of the two wicker bundles in front. It adds a nice element of symmetry that grabs the eye.

Have any street vendor photos you’ve taken during your travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

I look at this photo and I think, “yes, please.” Not only would I like to be witnessing this scene, I also want to splash around in some muddy water on a hot day like this. Don’t these elephants look all slick and refreshed? Adametrnl took this photo at the Pinewala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, where, he says, the elephants are taken to the river twice a day to bathe and cool off.

Do you have any photos that might inspire us to roll around in the mud? Post them to Gadling’s Flickr pool and we might select it for our Photo of the Day feature!

It’s sexy, sultry, and seductive. To some it’s forbidden, for others it’s a brief moment of passion stemmed from just a few musical notes, which for centuries have created a stirring sensation on the dance floor. The tango is one of the most romantic forms of dance and while some have tried to ban the dance from their halls, others have embraced the tango for everything it stands for.

So, when the mood strikes, just dance. That’s what the people outside this Cathedral we doing when Cristina Passarelli grabbed this shot of couples doing the tango in Argentina.

Titled “Tango en frente de la Catedral”, the photo captures an awesome irony between the tango’s forbidden footwork and the church’s regimented principles.

Have a photo you think captures art in motion? Upload it to our Flickr Pool and we might just choose your shot to highlight in our Photo of the Day.

If someone asked you to pick out Ushuaia on a map, would you know where to look? That’s the location of today’s Photo of the Day, taken by Flickr user pancha!.

Ushuaia (hear the pronunciation here) is the capital of Argentine province Tierra del Fuego and regarded as the southernmost city in the world. Tourists flock to Ushuaia for skiiing, wildlife, Antarctica-bound cruises, and apparently the beautiful sunsets. Light is key in any great photo, and this is certainly a great example of capturing a photo at just the right moment.

If you’ve been to a remote destination and snapped a great photo of it – share it with us! Drop it in our Gadling Flickr Pool and it could be tomorrow’s Photo of the Day!

I’m a sucker for great street art. In fact, finding it is one of my favorite travel activities. It’s way to tap into your inner explorer, wandering the streets of cities, stumbling upon hidden artwork and impromptu murals. As Flickr user t3mujin demonstrates in today’s pick, Berlin, Germany is one of the world’s best places for this kind of street art wandering. The giant superhero lends a sense of comedy to the scene – he looks ready to scoop up this unsuspecting pedestrian and fly off into the stratosphere.

Taken any great photos of murals during your own travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.
