Photo Of The Day: Cabin In The Woods

I like this image of a cabin in the woods, despite its slight seasonal dissonance, because it resembles a scrapbook image. “This is Terry in front of that awesome cabin right before she spied a moose and freaked out,” it could be annotated.

Or not.

This moody and lush image was snapped by Flickr user mciccone640 in Ontario in March.

Photo Of The Day: Turkish Tulips

April showers bring May flowers, as the saying goes. We’re getting plenty of rain this month in Turkey, but we’ve had flowers. April is the big month for tulips in Istanbul, and you can see them planted all over town as 11.5 million were planted for this year’s season. I took today’s photo at Emirgan Park, one of the prime viewing spots of the Istanbul Tulip Festival. There are over 100 varieties planted in Emirgan Park alone, many in interesting patterns like the nazar evil eye, a major symbol of Turkish superstition.

You probably associate tulips with Holland, but it was Ottoman Turks who first cultivated them and introduced them to the Dutch in the 17th century. Today, Turkey is trying to reclaim the flower, growing millions of tulips with a goal of becoming an exporter again by 2014. Along with fresh flowers, you can see the influence of the tulip in the shape of the Turkish tea glasses, and as legend has it, the shape of the sultan’s turbans.

Photo Of The Day: Where Do I Go From Here?

There comes a moment in every great voyage when one finds the need to sit and reflect. That sentiment is captured perfectly by Flickr user Jason Rodman in today’s Photo of the Day. Taken on a recent trip to Basel, the image depicts the Statue of Helvetia, mother of Switzerland, as she contemplates life from a perch overlooking the Rhine at sunset.

Photo Of The Day: Krabi Sunset

Perhaps no place is as romanticized as Thailand’s exotic stretches of coast and islands. The country’s many sugar-sand beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs and enticing emerald-clear waters create some of the most eye-catching scenery on Earth. In today’s photo, brought to us by Flickr user Geir Ertzgaard, we have further visual evidence taken at sunset near Krabi on Thailand’s western Andaman Coast. The striking Thai long-tail boat silhouetted in the foreground is complemented by the dazzling pinks and purples of the receding light.

Taken any photos on the beaches of Thailand? Or maybe just a shot on the coast in Texas? Add it to our Gadling group on Flickr. We might just pick your shot as our Photo of the Day.

Photo Of The Day: Ordinary Day

This Photo of the Day comes from Gadling Flickr pool member James Wheeler who captured the image using a Nikon D5000 and is titled “Ordinary Day.”

James describes the image as, “Yet another ‘ordinary’ sunrise from a dock near Jericho beach along the shore of Vancouver.”

To end up with this image, James used a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 lens on his Nikon D5000 mounted on a Slik Sprint Pro Tripod then worked it through Adobe Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro.
