Surf’s Up in Australia

Even if localsurfer finds the surf suitable in Norway, most of us
opt for warmer climes. And there is no better place right now than
Australia. It is summer
there, after all, and the tasty waves are aplenty. And so we go to the
Sydney Morning Herald
which offers up its take on the ten best surf spots in Oz. If the closest you’ve ever been to the land Down Under is a
sticky seat in a theater watching Crocodile Dundee, well, then the names of these beaches ain’t going to mean much. But
save the link for that trip next year, when you can ht the beaches from North Narrabeen to Kirra Beach, Coolangatta,
Gold Coast. Ripper.

Photo of the Day: (11/25/05)

Localsurfer, AkA Jon, has been nailing a lot of our Photos of the Day recently because of the sweet pics he took in
Norway. I confess I’m still puzzled by the whole surfing Norway thing. If I’d not seen his pics, I would never have
guessed you could surf in Norway…let alone desire to do so. No matter. Here’s
another photo by
localsurfer of the surf scene in Norway. This one is a photo of
some dude, Dan, as he heads out into the cold, bleak Northern water.

Photo of the Day: (11/16/05) Norway

A long time desire of mine has been to see the Northern Lights. In person that is. I want to
venture up North and take a long exposure shot of the Aurora Borealis…a photo
a lot like this one by
localsurfer. This is an amazingly cool photo. I was seriously
very inspired by it, and the whole series of Jon’s
from Norway is really just too damn cool. Hey, man, how was the surfing in Norway?

Hanging Ten in Nicaragua

We
mentioned Nicaragua as one of the top global surf
spots in several posts past, but I was having a conversation with a surfing buddy of mine here who was telling me that
I didn’t get it. Nicaragua is not just nice…it is so cool that I need to go now. Things are changing so rapidly, he
says, that people (that is, Americans) are discovering it in droves, and that doesn’t bode well for the authentic
flavor of the place.

I passed through Nicaragua years ago on my trip through South and Central America, and at that time it was hardly
the kind of place that average tourists would enjoy. I liked it because it was rough around the edges…actually it was
rough right down to the center…but that was fine by me. It made the place more interesting.

Well, here I am not helping things by mentioning Nicaragua, and leading you to
this fine site about surfing there. You can also take a look at
the Times piece from a
while back, although I’m guessing you might need a “Select” subscription. Damn you gray lady!

Surfing, Um, Alaska

Who woulda thunk? A small village in Alaska called Yakutat is reachable only by boat or plane, and yet it is
considered one of the best surf spots in the country. Or so the story says. Listen
to this NPR report on surfing where the
waves are ripper and one of your biggest concerns is, well, shrinkage.
