Dubai plans “Tower in Motion”

Nothing phases me in Dubai anymore. Anything and everything is possible in this city, so when I read news like this: “Dubai plans self-powered skyscraper with individually rotating floors,” I’m quite numb.

Opening para: “A $350 million tower to be known as the Dynamic Architecture building is to be constructed in Dubai. The 68-story tower will feature floors that can be individually rotated via voice commands.”

So each floor of this building will rotate individually to create a building that constantly changes shape. (I’ve stopped asking “why” when it comes to such projects.) Also, it will use wind-turbines to generate electricity for itself and another 5 buildings its size — that’s actually pretty neat, not to mention green.

Construction will start this month and word is that a similar project is in plan for Moscow as well.

Dubai: Riskiest place in the world for the unaware traveler

We wrote here on Gadling about Dubai arresting people for having a spec of marijuana on their shoes while transiting through the airport, and then sentencing them to 4-years in Dubai Central Prison.

I’m currently in Dubai and in the 3 days that I’ve been here I’ve heard of 4 stories of acquaintances in jail for having 0.02 grams of hash on them — all that happened at the airport on “Bush Day“.

I don’t know how they manage to sniff out people with 0.02 grams of hash on them. They say that the customs have some high-tech sensors that pick up on it, but there is no security check of consequence on the way out; your hand bag does get screened, but that’s after passport control and there isn’t any walk-through detector.

There’s a lead story in today’s Guardian that talks about the same and how Dubai has the longest list of banned substances, possession of which leads to imprisonment. The list includes: codeine, poppy seeds and many well-known anti-depressants.
Actually, in theory, people traveling through Dubai who have consumed drugs in another city if stopped and questioned can be asked to give a urine sample for a drug test. If the test is positive, the person can still go to jail. This happened to a close friend of mine who went to Goa on holiday and got stoned every night. They picked him up on a random advertising agency drug raid a few years ago, and he was sentenced to 4 years.

I flew here on a resident visa and because of these nonsensical laws, I was paranoid that in the blood test I have to do to validate my resident visa, they might see traces of marijuana that I might’ve inhaled passively in some of Madrid’s bars. However, looks like they don’t test for drugs in this case.

I understand that Dubai wants to be 100% drug-free but some of the arrests they are making are just ridiculous. I could have been walking in Amsterdam before I got onto my flight to Dubai, and a spec of some illegal substance could have remained on my shoe — that would give me 4 years of jail in Dubai. Come on! Besides, you can’t do anything with a spec of any drug!

By implementing such strict laws, the Dubai authorities have definitely scared tourists and residents alike, but I think they need to be more realistic and reasonable about the arrests they make and the subsequent sentences.

Use your own credit card to book your flight or get knocked off

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Airways recently offloaded many people from their flights because they had booked their tickets online with a credit card that wasn’t theirs, but a friend’s or a relative’s. These people had to purchase another ticket if they still wanted to fly.

I know that a few other Middle Eastern airlines, all Indian airlines, and Cathay Pacific, have the same policy to the extent that the person who’s credit card has been used to book the flight, needs to accompany you to check-in.

When my parents came to visit me in Madrid from France, I booked them flights on my credit card; similarly when my brother and I traveled around Spain, all flight/train/hostel bookings were made under my name. If all airlines, or any travel-service related company for that matter, begin using this policy, they may lose lots of business from online purchasers so I wonder if it will ever become standard online booking policy.

It’s all to prevent credit card fraud, but seriously inconvenient, no?

Brad Pitt to design luxury Dubai hotel

He may be a well-known actor, but according to Brad Pitt, his real passion is architecture. The Hollywood star is taking his passion to Dubai where he will be designing a five star resort, complete with hotel rooms and a leisure complex which will host flashy events and awards ceremonies. According to the property company, the complex will be “socially conscious” and a world leader in environmental sustainability.

Pitt says he has a strong belief in “environmentally friendly architecture,” but that gives rise to the following question: how environmentally friendly can a 800 room luxury resort really be? I mean, aren’t the oil tycoons, Hollywood stars and big time businessman who will be the hotel’s main clientele already putting a significant cost on the environment with their private jets and numerous automobiles?

Are these the strangest hotels on the planet?

Big in Dubai: 5 awesome things you can do in Dubai right now

This week, Big in Japan is on vacation in the Middle East, and will be bringing you travel news and happenings from this often misunderstood region.

Read the news on any given day, and you’ll mostly likely hear about the biggest, tallest, and most expensive something or other in Dubai, that crazy oil-rich Emirate that makes Las Vegas look about as glamorous as a county fair in Nebraska. Then again, you have to give credit where credit is due. Although the oil tap is predicted to run dry sometime in the next several decades, the rulers of Dubai are on a campaign to make their tiny Persian Gulf state into one of the world’s leading tourist attractions.

Of course, these days Dubai is something of a glorified construction site, especially since the city is rumored to contain something crazy like 15% of all the cranes in the world! And, while it’s still going to be another five to ten years before Dubai can rest on its laurels as the top destination in the Middle East, there are still plenty of mind-blowing attractions that are currently open and eagerly waiting for your tourist dollar.

On that note, I present to you ‘5 awesome things you can do in Dubai right now.’

1) Mall of the Emirates – I hail originally from the great state of New Jersey, so it’s kinda hard to shake my innate desire to be a mallrat regardless of where I am in the world. Then again, this isn’t such a terrible curse to have when you can kick it in the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest malls in the world, which is home to no less than 6.5 million square feet of commercial space.

2) Ski DubaiWhile you’re at the Mall of the Emirates, take a break from your retail therapy for a little powder action. Although skiing and Middle East climes are an incongruous match (to say the least!), the Mall of the Emirates is home to Ski Dubai, one of the world’s largest indoor ski slopes. The key to this absurdity is an extremely efficient insulation system, which helps maintain a daytime temperature of 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

3) Burj al-Arab – Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep, especially when it’s at the world’s only 7-star hotel. Situated on an artificial island floating in the Persian Gulf, the Burj-al Arab is the new pinnacle of luxury in Dubai, especially since the cheapest rooms here cost thousands and thousands of dollars a night. But, can you really put a price on having a gold-rimmed toilet bowl?

4) Bab al Shams Desert Resort – If you can’t afford to bed down at the Burj al-Arab, consider peeling a few Benjamins out of your wallet for a night at Bab al Shams in the middle of the Arabian Desert. Of course, we’re not talking about some dusty old canvas tents and stinky camel hair carpets, but rather a boutique resort hotel that blends 5-star amenities with a stunningly beautiful natural setting.

5) Burj Dubai – Although it’s technically still a work in progress, the Burj Dubai makes the list simply because it’s already the world’s tallest building even though it’s not yet completed! At this point in time, all you can really do here is crane your neck up to the heavens at stare at a super skyscraper reminiscent of the Eye of Sauron, but it’s still bad-ass experience nevertheless.
