Video of the Day: Arkanoid on a Seoul building

We kind of love finding YouTube videos without descriptions. It’s endlessly fun to try to piece together what the heck is happening. In the video above, it appears as if someone is playing the old Arkanoid video game on the massive LED screen in Seoul Square in South Korea’s capital. In fact, it looks like it might just be the world’s largest LED screen. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours. What’s the high score? How many lives do you get? How close can you sit to the screen before your mom tells you that you’re going to go blind?

Video: STUCK in the Dallas airport

STUCK from Joe Ayala on Vimeo.

If you’ve ever been stuck in any airport overnight, you’ll appreciate this video titled STUCK. When Larry Chen and Joe Ayala found themselves stranded overnight in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport, they decided to have a little bit of fun with their predicament. The two filmed themselves at the airport, making the best of the overnight stay. I was once stuck overnight in the Detroit airport. I wish I’d had the wherewithal to conjure up the fun-having skills these guys had.

If you’ve been stuck in an airport overnight, tell us about it! I want to read your gruesome stories in the comments on this piece.

“Come Fly With Me” crash lands tomorrow on BBC America

Back when the only thing on television was either about lawyers or crime scenes, I lamented about the lack of a show featuring the airline industry.

How things have changed.

There are now documentary, drama, comedy and reality shows that cover every aspect of the airline world.

BBC and ITV have each done ‘fly on the wall’ documentaries; Airport and Airline, there are dramas such as the upcoming Pan Am, the defunct, but wildly raunchy British show Mile High, reality shows like Discovery’s Flying Wild Alaska and Ice Pilots, not to mention the painfully mind-numbing Fly Girls.

Now the BBC is back with six episodes of a documentary comedy called Come Fly with Me that premiers in the U.S. on BBC America at 11:30 p.m. eastern tomorrow.

We had a chance to watch the first three episodes from the show, which was enough to realize that the program will be just as controversial here in the U.S. as it was in the U.K.

If you haven’t figured it out from the late night time slot, Come Fly with Me is a politically incorrect edgy comedy that isn’t afraid to use racial stereotypes to get some laughs.

But the racial jokes don’t even qualify as being funny. There were other amusing parts, since airlines are the low hanging fruit in the comedy world, but most of the jokes seemed overworked and not at all subtle.

Granted, I’ll admit that I laughed out loud when a passenger service agent lied about a maintenance delay (caused by wing failure) explaining that it was because “The pilot is still at home ’cause he’s watching Avatar on DVD and he didn’t realize how long it was.”

And I rather enjoyed the Captain and Copilot husband and wife team formed when the captain’s wife decided to become a pilot to keep an eye on her husband after she discovered he had cheated on her.

Most of the scenes are played by David Walliams and Matt Lucas, each taking turns dressing up as the pilots, flight attendants, ticket agents, the CEO and many of the airport staff. In this scene, Walliams and Lucas parody the check-in staff:

The airport and airline scenes are highly realistic, having been filmed in London’s Stansted and the cockpits of actual aircraft which was refreshing for a change.

In all, I’d say it’s a show that airline nuts probably should watch as they’ll likely appreciate a few of the jokes. But I’d leave the seat belt sign on for the onslaught of criticism Come Fly With Me will generate after the first airing.

Video: Spring backcountry skiing – beware the bears!

It’s no secret that the western U.S. has had its fair share of snow this year. In fact, there has been so much powder that the skiing has continued well into the spring in some locations. Of course, late seasons skiing comes with its own unique perils, as the two skiers in the video below found out recently.

Shot on Mt. Tallac, a 9739-foot peak to the southwest of Lake Tahoe, in late May, the video shows two backcountry skiers out for a few late season runs. But if you watch closely, you’ll see that they ran into more than they had bargained for when the cameraman skis right past a bear.

Having no doubt just awoken from its winter slumber, the groggy bear was likely just as surprised to see the skiers. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this encounter, but I’m sure a few hearts skipped a beat.

SkyMall Monday: Product Video Edition

I’ve been writing SkyMall Monday since October 13, 2008. That’s two-and-a-half years of reviewing SkyMall products. In that time, I’ve written over 130 SkyMall Monday posts. I’ve gotten to know a few people at SkyMall, but I am in no way, shape or form affiliated with the company. However, I think the time as come for me to take on a roll within SkyMall. This would not be for my own benefit, however. SkyMall needs me. You see, some of the products have short video demos that SkyMall has created. They utilize their own employees for the videos. These clips are – how do I saw this diplomatically? – not as good as they could be. I’ve recorded videos about SkyMall products in the past (like this, this and this, though that last one is more of a slideshow). I was born to star in SkyMall videos. No one could do a better job of highlighting the various features of all of these wondrous products than I could. Take a look at some examples of SkyMall videos to see exactly what I mean. Then see how you can help my cause.AquaBells

There are a few more videos for your viewing pleasure on SkyMall’s YouTube channel.

If you think that I should star in all future SkyMall product videos, you can let them know by sending them a note. I’d share their marketing person’s email address, but I’m fairly certain that I’d get in trouble with my bosses or ruin any chances I had of getting the SkyMall video gig. Make your voices heard and I promise to make the best videos ever.
