GPS and PMS

Men beware: driving with a woman in the passenger seat can make for a hazardous driving experience. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to give directions and been assaulted for getting us lost. Is it better, though, for a woman or a GPS with PMS to give directions?

Even worse, have you ever yourself gotten PMS when trying to follow rotten GPS directions?

Let’s face it: sometimes we’re better off just getting lost than coping with the stupid GPS system. Tell us your failed GPS stories in the comment field below.

Flight attendant going bonkers? Here’s one hilarious explanation

For Gadling’s day of posts centered on Vintage America, Scott treated us to 10 vintage airline commercials. Those commercials put airlines and their personnel in a positive light. Here’s a video with another version of air travel thanks to one very cranky flight attendant.

Thankfully, this is a commercial for a product other than an airline, but it perfectly captures the worst aspects of travel –plus, it’s hilarious. Haven’t you had times on an airplane when you wish you could behave this way? The passenger version of these scenarios would be funny as well.

For a bonus there is a video of three other commercials after the jump. You’ll recognize other flight attendant pet peeves.

Top Ten All-Time Scariest Travel-Themed Movies

Halloween is a-comin’. In the mood for some scary movies? So are we! That’s why we’ve made a list of the Top Ten All-Time Scariest Travel-Themed Movies for you. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil the endings, just give you the gist and the Netflix links. Watch at your own risk; you may never travel again.

The Top Ten All-Time Scariest Travel-Themed Movies

1. The Exorcist — It all goes to Hell (somewhat literally) when Father Merrin is leading an archaeological dig in Iraq and pulls Pazuzu out of the sand. Be careful what you dig up on your trips to ancient cities!

2. Psycho — Gadling does not recommend the showers at the Bates Motel.

3. The Shining — This Kubrick classic starring Jack Nicholson takes place in a hotel which gets snowed in for the winter. All hotel hallways have a similar look to them, and all will feel a little more dangerous when you’ve seen what little Danny sees.

4. The Strangers — The most recent scary flick on our list (2008) stars Liv Tyler and Australian supermodel Gemma Ward. You know that isolated vacation home, or perhaps cabin, that you long to escape to? Watch this first. (Or don’t.)5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre — Oh my gosh, people. Don’t pick up hitchhikers, and don’t enter strange houses in isolated towns where you’re investigating graveyard vandalism and corpse defilement. This is Not Getting Killed 101.

6. The Descent — Spelunking is cool and all, with the stalactites, stalagmites and fascinating species of animals who’ve evolved to live underground, but first, find out what the name of the cave is …

7. The Hills Have Eyes — If someone invites you on a road trip and you don’t want to go, pop this 1977 Wes Craven hit into their mailbox. They may reconsider.

8. Hostel — Ah, backpacking. It’s all fun and games until you visit the wrong hostel. Just remember: if you’re abroad and someone invites you somewhere promising loose women and good times, you are not that good looking. Run for your life.

9. Vacancy — Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson may not be your idea of a good horror film duo, but the concept of this movie will freak you out next time you visit an isolated hotel with no cell reception — oh yeah, and, you probably shouldn’t do that.

10. The Blair Witch Project — Ten years later, we are still laughing about the one sentence review: “Three potty mouths in a thicket.” Still, if investigating local ghost stories or taking extensive hikes is part of your regular vacation fare, make sure you’ve seen this cult favorite.

You’ll note that in all cases, we’ve linked the originals, not the remakes. That wasn’t an accident. Just sayin’.

Happy Halloween!

Vintage candy making in Maine

Ever since 1915, Haven’s Candies has been making hand-crafted candy in a traditional way, much like the company’s founder Herbert Haven and his wife did when they first started making candy in their kitchen. They sold their confections from the parlor of their house on Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine.

Now there are three Haven’s Candies locations. The company’s flagship candy making facility, that includes a retail and wholesale store, is in Westbrook, Maine. Other retail locations are in Portland and Scarborough.

If you’ve ever wondered how candy is made the old fashioned way, this video clip of Haven’s Candies covers it. From peanut butter cups to coconut haystacks to candy canes, it’s all here. By the end, you’ll have a sweet tooth craving.

It is possible to see Haven’s Candies being made in person. There is an open house at the candy factory every year on Columbus Day. Guided tours are also available at other times. Plus, the candy making area of the Westbrook location has glass windows. When the store is open you can watch the candy production.

Family Guy in a corn maze at 105-year-old farm

In Utah, Edward and Jacob, the two guy hotties in Twilight, have found corn maze fame. At Connors Farm in Danvers, Massachusetts, Brian and Stewie from Family Guy are representing pop culture in an elaboratelyy, mowed cornstalk design.

The presence of both of these mazes is an indication of how many family-owned farms have stayed in business over the years. To stay afloat, keeping up with the times through ingenuity, multi-tasking and hard work is a must. Connors Farm is a perfect example of how many farms have changed.

Back in 1904, when the farm was established, the family took the produce by truck to Boston to sell the goods wholesale. This worked out fine until the price of sweet corn fell in the 1950s. Opening a small, roadside stand became the best option for making money. That move has developed into a family-fun, farm produce fresh gold mine.

Over the years, the stand has expanded to include fresh baked goods, gourmet pastas, jars of jams, jellies and sauces and the farm’s own products. The farm also partially operates as a U-pick establishment where visitors pick what’s in season. The annual Strawberry Festival, pony rides, hay rides, and autumn corn maze have made Connors Farm a multi-purpose, multi-age destination most of the year.

The Family Guy corn maze has turned out to be a brilliant choice. It’s attracted serious, media attention, for one thing. The video after the jump is a fun trip through the maze blended with Family Guy footage from FOX25NEWS in Boston.

There are two weeks left for this corn maze. The last night is October 31.
