Sigur Rós Heima Trailer

Sigur Rós is a band from Iceland. This coming November, they’ll be releasing a live DVD called Heima which chronicles their return home over several live shows. I just saw the trailer for the DVD today (above), and it’s exquisite. I’ve never been to Iceland, so I can’t speak first-handedly, but the outdoor footage in the trailer is absolutely gorgeous and very surreal. Many of the moon-like landscapes were shot at a live show performed at the Ásbyrgi canyon, 2 hours east of the second-largest Icelandic town of Akureyri. If the trailer is any indication of the feature-length production, I’ll be ordering the DVD (though I suppose it helps that I’m a fan of the band as well). Regardless, the footage is really re-sparking my interest in a trip to Iceland.

At the Travel Agency with Monty Python

There’s nothing quite like Monty Python to really take the piss out of going on holiday.

In the video above, for example, we have a proper British gentleman making a simple inquiry at a travel agency (remember those?). The thought of going on another vacation, however, brings back a flood of discontent from other holidays gone bad, and our fine chap expresses his dismay by ranting on in a way that only the British can do… “sitting in cotton sun frocks squirting Timothy White sun screen all over their puffy, and swollen pile of flesh because they over did it on their first day.”

Choose Your Russian Taxi Carefully!

I’m not sure I ever had much of an interest in visiting Russia before I started reading EnglishRussia.com. I mean sure, I’d go if the opportunity presented itself, but once my favorite Russian blog hit the scene and they started covering all sorts of “largest country in the world” oddities did I realize this was truly a place I wanted to go.

Take this video for instance, simply titled Moscow Taxi. “When you travel to Russia, choose your taxi carefully!” EnglishRussia.com reads. “Or you might get a ride with anybody like this Moscow taxi cab…” How could I watch this video and not want to visit Russia someday?

The embedded version above is actually an edited version. For the full video, head to EnglishRussia.com.

Glacial Surfing: Another Extreme Sport

Neil wrote a series of posts on traveling in Alaska without a cruise ship. Here’s another item to add to the things to do in Alaska list–if you are TOTALLY NUTS!! Head to a glacier, wait for the edge to fall off, and, when it does, ride the tidal wave on a surfboard as the ice chases you down. That’s what world championship surfers Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala did earlier this year at Child’s Glacier. This clip from Deep Water Films captures the essence in less than two minutes. I saw a version of this on CNN which prompted my You Tube quest.

Video: Commuting in Mumbai

I didn’t bring along a video camera to India because I didn’t want to have to deal with making sure it wasn’t broken, lost, or forgotten somewhere. But after I arrived, I immediately realized my mistake because almost every second of every day I was there, I saw video-able material. It’s a good thing other travelers bring along their cameras, or else we wouldn’t have the video above, taken by YouTube user Jaiwit. It’s simply titled “Commuting in Mumbai” which — well, I’ll just let you watch it.
