Deadwood Trips

I try my best not to begin watching new TV shows, especially those on HBO. This is not because I am some kind of snooty anti-TV elitist (although I am, sort of. I mean, most of what’s on TV these days is garbage and a colossal WOT). But then you stumble on a show like the Sopranos or 24 and you’re hooked.

Well, I’ve been hooked for a couple of years now on the HBO show Deadwood. What can I say? I think it is one of the most clever, brutally entertaining programs I can remember. It’s been a wild hit for the company and, like all wild hits…i.e. Sex and the City…it has spawned its own cottage travel industry. To wit: there are now ample outfitters and touring companies offering trips to the real Deadwood, in Wyoming South Dakota.

Nevermind they don’t even shoot the program there. But the town has spruced itself up real nice-like, put on some lipstick and taken a bath, and now brings in tourists by the bus load.

Now, I’m not advocating you go to Deadwood, but as you will read in this piece over at Sunset magazine, there is an allure to doing so. Some of the places in the show are real places. Some are obviously there because of the show (I wonder if you can buy a Swearengen doll that says c*cksucker when you pull the string?). There is, for example, a Bullock Hotel. You can also see where Wild Bill’s body lies, which happens to be right next to Calamity Jane’s grave at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery above Deadwood. Whether you can visit Trixie at the Gem Saloon, well, the article doesn’t say.

Scourist Rules

Not sure how many people remember the numerous times we’ve blogged about Mr. Jon Rawlinson, but it’s time we did so again. Jon sent me an email recently that kind of sat there waiting for me to click on it. There was a link there that looked enticing, but for some reason, I just kind of let it languish there in unclicked limbo.

Well, no longer. And boy was I missing out. Jon is the man (well, one of them) behind an amazing, fabulous, wonderful new site called Scourist. What does that mean, exactly? Well, he means that they are “scouring” the earth in search of adventure. But more than that, they are shooting gobs of video, cutting it all into nice bite-sized segments ,and posting the stuff online.

I’ve been sitting here checking these videos out and if I looked in the mirror right now, I’d be looking at a very green face. I am OVERCOME with envy at this moment because of all the things I would like to be doing in this world right now, shooting video in an African game park is definitely near the top of the list. Top of the list would be hanging out ,martini in hand in Hef’s jacuzzi, but that’s another kind of dream.

I urge you to go and spend some time on Scourist now .It is really one of the best travel video sites I’ve seen in a while.

And this time we REALLY mean it .

Surf Video

Nothing like Surfing on the Web, know what I mean? No, no ,I’m not talking about noodling around your friend’s MySpace site. I’m actually talking about surfing. You see, Surfer Magazine has got a ton of sweet surfing video online just waiting for your lunchtime attention. Available in both Quicktime and Windows Media ,the clips are well-produced and in some cases awe-inspiring. They’ve done a great job organizing them here and making available an array of great footage. In particular check out Ultimate Sessions: The Greatest Moments in Surf Movie History. If that doesn’t make you feel lousy abot surfing at your computer rather than in Hawaii right now, I’m not sure what will.

Red Corner: Karlovy Vary Film Festival

If you find yourself anywhere near the Czech Republic in the next few days make sure to swing by the beautiful spa resort town of Karlovy Vary where the 41st annual Karlovy Vary Film Festival kicked off on Friday.

Nestled in the mountains near the German border and famous throughout history for its thermal springs, Karlovy Vary is well worth a visit on its own outside of the film festival.

The city, however, cranks it up a notch June 30 – July 8th when “over 220 feature films and up to 40 short films from all over the world” compete in various categories, including one dedicated solely to films from the former communist bloc. 14 of the festival selections this year will be world premiers, including Edmond, a David Mamet script staring William H. Macy, Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pidgeon.

Special guests this year will include Andy Garcia (who will receive the Crystal Globe award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema), Terry Gilliam, Timothy Hutton, Jacqueline Bisset, John Irving, and others.

Flying First Class with the Emirates

Ah, first class. The real silverware, the champagne on your arrival, the cushy seats. It just doesn’t get any better than that. Or does it? Well, a site that features some of the best that Google Video has to offer featured this clip, shot by an obvious amateur, of his experience riding on United Emirate Airlines. The camera work is shoddy, but the seats, well, lets just say you’ll be seething the next time you ride coach.

Travel like a sheik with a gaping space all to yourself and fresh OJ in a crystal glass. All that’s missing are the belly dancers and the harem girls feeding you loins of lamb. Of course, maybe the guy’s tape ran out.
