Photo of the Day (3.7.09)

March marks the shifting of weather from cold to tolerable or from warm to cool. For those of you who are looking forward to warmer days and a little more fire, even a brief glance at this gorgeous photo from tysonwilliams will brighten your day.

Talk about fire in the sky — and I’m not alluding to the aurora borealis this time, I’m actually referring to that bright orange, fiery glow that is perfectly captured at sunset in Cannes.

If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

Beer babe’s favorite European bars

Katarina Van Derham, the 2009 St. Pauli Girl spokesmodel, doesn’t like to spend all her time in one place. The Slovakia native now lives in Los Angeles and still loves to get out on the road as much as possible. When she’s home, her favorite place to grab a pint is Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica. She can have a relaxing drink on the patio, which is a prime people-watching spot. Of course, she has favorites on the other side of the Atlantic, as well.

The 2009 St. Pauli Girl spokesmodel‘s European Favorites are:

Morrison Pub (Cannes, France): there’s always live music and a welcoming crowd; Cannes’ “beautiful beaches and relaxed vibe” help

Phanas Pub (Rijeka, Croatia): Phanas is a great party place with rock music piped in; Katarina came here while shooting a music video for a Slovakian band

Mermaid Bar (Ibiza, Spain): this bar caters to an international crowd, has clear water and a great club scene

U Medvédku (Prague, Czech Republic): a house beer and authentic Czech food are served, and you’re only footsteps from the city’s stunning architecture

CK Browar (Krakow, Poland): grab a beer at this bright brewery before shopping at the outdoor street fairs on Saturdays

Salm Bräu (Vienna, Austria): located in a charming old building, this bar is a great stop en route to Slovakia (since Vienna has the nearest international airport)

France is romance at Valentine’s Day

Put your economic woes an ocean away with a trip to France on Valentine’s Day. Concorde Hotels & Resorts is offering great deals from February 13 to February 16 at its Parisian hotels, with rates starting at $172 a night. They’re sweetening it with a daily buffet breakfast for two, a 50 percent discount on the second night and a special surprise gift that they wouldn’t even reveal to me (ugh).

Or, if you prefer the French Riviera, check out the Hotel Martinez in Cannes. The property is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and wants to bring you in on the festivities. A two-night stay on February 13 and February 14 or February 15 and February 16 starts at $271 for the first night and only $103 for the second! You’ll get a VIP welcome (which you deserve) and in-room or buffet breakfast. Also, they’re giving complimentary fitness center and sauna access … but you probably don’t want to tell your significant other to hit the treadmill on Valentine’s Day!

Cannes Cam 2007

Can’t make it to Cannes this year? Me either. But that’s okay — The IFC’s website is streaming a live video feed from a camera hovering over the red carpet at Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais.

According to IFC, “Most film premieres take place around 7pm and 10pm local time, or 1pm/4pm ET,” but action on the carpet is dead right now (save for a few birds and honking horns). Occasionally they will pan the camera around the bay to show off the billion-dollar boats bobbing up and down in the Mediterranean.

According to the festival schedule [PDF], LES CHANSONS D’AMOUR is set to premiere in less than an hour at the Palais, so keep an eye on the camera. [via]
