Photo Of The Day: Day Of The Dead

Hope you all had a happy Halloween, and came up with some creative travel costumes (my family and I went as Matryoshkas, or Russian nesting dolls). Now that the calendar has flipped over into November, it’s a time to honor our beloved who have passed on All Saints’ Day, or as it is known in Mexico, Dia de los Muertos. Skeletons and skulls are a pretty common theme in Day of the Dead decor and art, as demonstrated by our own Pam Mandel’s Halloween costume, continuing on the scary feel of Halloween. The skulls in today’s Photo of the Day aren’t Mexican, they’re French, from the Paris catacombs, which contain the bones of millions of Parisians. The remains are made extra spooky with the company of a devil, of the stuffed toy Tasmanian sort, though I suspect he was an addition by Australian photographer BaboMike.

If you can’t make it to Mexico this year, Denver has some Day of the Dead events too.

Photo Of The Day: Streaky Water

This Photo of the Day, taken in Ontario, Canada and titled “Streaky Water,” comes from Gadling Flickr pool member James Wheeler who captured this image using a Nikon D5000.

Captioning the photo, James tells us:

“The streaks in the water are the fall leaves and bubbles quickly rushing by in this fast moving creek. There was no shortage of leaves falling in the creek as you can see with the piles on the shore top left.”

Photo Of The Day: Rainy San Francisco

Rainy San Francisco is the City by the Bay at its most atmospheric. When San Francisco becomes fully waterlogged and gray it lodges itself most deeply in wistful sentiment. This image, taken by Flickr user Cosmic Smudge on Jones Street in Nob Hill, is made all the more dreamily nostalgic thanks to the ghostly impression left by the Transamerica Pyramid in the background.

Photo Of The Day: Airplane Arms

When you were a kid, there’s a fair chance you spent some time running amok, arms outstretched, and making airplane sounds. Airplane enthusiast and proud papa Branden Williams captured just such a moment of his kids’ “airplane arms” with a 1960 Cessna single-engine plane. The black-and-white makes it feel timeless, and takes us back to a time when we didn’t scowl about children on planes, but dreamed of flying one as a child.

Photo Of The Day: Airplane Over Houston

With modern photo editing techniques, it’s often difficult to tell the real from the, well, embellished.

Today’s Photo of the Day was snapped by Flickr user Neil Marek with an iPhone during an airplane descent on George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. Its vintage feel is courtesy of Snapseed, an easy-to-use photo editing software for the iPhone, iPad and desktops, which offers much of the functionality of fancy photo programs like Adobe Photoshop, but at a fraction of the cost.

Does it have the purity of an unedited photograph taken by a fancy DSLR camera? Maybe not. But it’s still a very cool image.
