Video of the Day: Tilt-shift Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro

Carnaval (or, as we like to write it, Carnival) was last week, but we’re just not done celebrating here at Gadling HQ. This video is from Carnaval 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, but we can’t stop watching it. Of course, we love tilt-shift and this video uses the technique perfectly. Though, we’d like some explanation about why it opens with someone getting rescued from the ocean by a helicopter. Well, Carnaval is crazy like that.

Photo of the Day: Milky Way

This Photo of the Day comes from Gadling Flickr Pool member John Overmeyer, captured with a Canon EOS 7D and taken at the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania.

“The tree is located at the top edge of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania,” John captions. The Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera, lies within a conservation area administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government

Upload your best shots to the Gadling Group Pool on Flickr. Several times a week we choose our favorite images from the pool as Photos of the Day.

Photo of the day: Lombok landscape

Sometimes you want to look at a pristine landscape completely devoid of humans. Other times, as in this wonderfully verdant Lombok landscape snapped by Flickr user Bernard-SD, the inclusion of a human being is an engaging detail. This blue-shirted fellow, after all, allows viewers to imagine themselves within the scene itself.

And there are certainly worse prospects than imagining oneself wandering Indonesia‘s Lombok island. Situated east of Bali–still Indonesia’s biggest tourism draw–Lombok boasts rural charms and beautiful beaches both.

Upload your photos of landscapes (peopled by solitary humans or otherwise) to the Flickr Gadling Group Pool. We pick our favorites from the pool to be future Photos of the Day.

Video of the Day: Adorable little girls dancing samba at Rio Carnival

The scene outside the Sambodrome stadium on the first night of Rio Carnival‘s famed samba school parades was madness. Hordes of people moved in all directions while scalpers hawked tickets, street vendors fried food, and costumed paraders maneuvered in huge feathered costumes. As far as Fat Tuesday celebrations go, this was tops.

In the middle of the chaos, these two talented little girls attracted a crowd with their quick samba moves, coy winks, and adorable smiles. What showboats! If Rio’s samba schools are recruiting for future parades, they need look no further. These girls provided as much entertainment as the show inside the stadium.

Video of the Day: Southwest hotpants

We came across this Southwest Airlines ad from 1972 and, well, we’re pretty speechless. It’s simple and to the point.

Remember what it was like before Southwest Airlines? You didn’t have hostesses in hotpants. Remember?

No wonder Southwest Airlines doesn’t charge to check bags. Luggage doesn’t take up much space when your clothing is that small.
