Photo of the day – Buenos Aires overpass

This vibrant Buenos Aires overpass can’t help but grab viewers’ attention. Situated in the neighborhood of Recoleta, it looks as if it were inspired by a fancy silk scarf. (As an aside, why does super colorful public art crop up so infrequently in cities much grayer than Buenos Aires? One glance at colors like these and a minor case of Seasonal Affective Disorder might just vaporize.)

Flickr user Guillermo Esteves took this photograph. We just featured another of Esteves’ photos as this past Wednesday’s Photo of the Day. We like his work.

Photo of the Day: Smoked Turkish cheese

It used to be a common expression to say that someone “smoked like a Turk,” and I can confirm after living in Istanbul for nearly two years, Turks still love their smoking. Even after the indoor smoking ban of 2009, cigarettes and nargile (water pipes) are very common here. This portrait by Flickr user MichaelAV captures two of the Turks’ other loves: çay (see the tiny tea glass on the left) and cheese. So beloved is Turkish cheese that I’ve heard of Turks packing their suitcases full of it when traveling abroad. Be sure to try some with your Turkish breakfast or along with a glass of rakı at cocktail hour if you visit Turkey.

Take any portraits of locals with their favorite things? Add them to the Gadling Flickr pool and you may see it as a future Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day: San Telmo antiques

Few things make me happier than flea market shopping in foreign cities. Perusing the gorgeous antiques, handcrafted jewelry, and other treasures at the weekly Feria de San Telmo in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was pretty close to a heavenly experience. This photo, from Flickr user Guillermo Esteves, captures one of the market’s beautiful arrays of antique seltzer bottles and was taken with an Olympus XZ-1.

Video of the Day: Making tacos in space

Preparing your own meals while on the road can be tough. You don’t always have a proper kitchen stocked with all of the tools and appliances that you need. Ingredients can be difficult to find. Still, at least we always have gravity to help us out. Not so for astronauts. When it’s dinner time, they have to assemble their tacos in zero gravity. The last thing that anybody wants is refried beans in the ventilation system. Think of this guy and his space taco the next time you want to complain that the kitchen in your RV is too cramped.

Photo of the day – Winter branches

Today’s Photo of the Day captures a mess of winter branches spread across a gray sky like competing capillary systems. Winter officially began in the Northern Hemisphere on December 22. There’s no nice way to say it. Winter is here, and the leaves have been gone for some time.

Unlike most Photos of the Day, this one was uploaded without any information provided as to the shot’s location. Its photographer, Flickr user femme_fm, lives in Zagreb, so we’ll imagine that this image was snapped in the Croatian capital, where it is, no surprise, currently freezing.

Upload your favorite seasonal images to the Gadling Group Pool over at Flickr. We’re always looking for season-attuned photographs to be featured as future Photos of the Day.
