When did ziplines become so prevalent? Somewhere along the way, we went from traveling to places to either relax or explore local cultures to careening through trees on a series of cables. When did this happen? Why are they so popular? Beyond that, I have a hard time believe that everyone staffing these ziplines knows what they are doing. I mean, are there accredited zipline certification programs? If there are, I’m certain that the folks in this video failed to pass the required courses.

Video of the Day: Crowded Tokyo subway
It’s Monday, which, for most people, means back to work. After two glorious days with your friends, families and your the comforts of home, it’s back to the office. But, before you can get to your place of business, you first need to commute. Many of you spend hours sitting in traffic. Others wait for trains while tapping your feet and looking at the time. No matter how annoying your commute is, however, odds are that it’s more comfortable than the one endured by our friends in Tokyo. The subways there are notoriously crowded. How crowded? They’re so packed, that workers on the platforms push people in so that the doors can close. And when the doors do close, try to make sure that your jacket doesn’t get caught.

Homesickness drives today’s Photo of the Day, which contrasts the blur of a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train in a San Francisco station with a passenger’s shiny jacket. I’m a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, see, and though I’ve lived away from the region for about half of my adult life, the Bay Area will always feel like home.
BART’s once-futuristic carriages may not be at the cutting edge of public transportation design, but they are an aesthetic constant in the Bay Area. Snapped by Flickr member jrodmanjr, this image captures the dated futurism of a BART station.

Photo of the day – morning coffee in Thailand
How do you take your coffee? Flickr user LadyExpat posted this lovely setup from Chiang Mai, Thailand. Coffee is a thing beloved around the world and served differently everywhere. Turkey may be famous for its dense and tiny cups of coffee, but tulip-shaped glasses of tea and ready made Nescafe are more popular with locals and the muddy stuff is served more as digestif. In Italy, don’t even think of ordering a milky coffee past breakfast or your waiter will warn you of getting a stomachache. In Argentina, I looked forward to sweet media lunes each morning with my cafe con leche.
