Photo of the day – Wine shop window

Some things look exactly the way they’re supposed to look. Take this wine shop window snapped in the town of Beaune in the heart of Burgundy, France. This is serious wine country, and this wine shop window is straight out of central casting: the row of wine bottles; the various discarded crates; the exterior trim; the cursive stenciled into the window. Flickr user Lobelia48 shot this image in June of this year.

Photo of the day – put a tiger in your tank

Did today’s Photo of the Day make you look twice? The tiger you see in the car is not a real animal, but a stuffed tiger at a car show display taken by Flickr user justchuckfl. The car is a British-made 1965 Tiger with a tail peeking out of the gas tank from Esso, whose slogan was “put a tiger in your tank.” The tiger is pretty lifelike for a stuffed animal, though I’d think the real cat would sit in the front seat.

Photo of the day: Budapest mist

I have never visited Hungary or Budapest, but this photo by Christoph Sahle of a misty day in Budapest makes me want to. Touring musicians, travel writers, and wandering friends have warned me of the city’s immense beauty, telling me I’ll never want to leave should I ever go. Well, those kinds of places are precisely the kinds of places I want to visit. I suspect they are the kinds of places you want to visit, too. I have traveled many a time to places that I enjoyed visiting, but, while there, also looked forward to leaving. Normally those places don’t fall into any decent spot on my personal top travel spot list, though. The places I love most and look the most fondly back on tend to be the places I don’t ever want to leave. Furthermore, I have been living in Austin, Texas for nearly a year now. Having grown up in Ohio and proceeding the live in New York City for 8 years, I am not used to the weather down here–particularly not in this horrible drought. I miss the mist like this so much; I miss the thick fog and the good excuse to curl up with a cup of tea and a book. Maybe that makes me sound like an old lady, and if that is the case, label be so. But these kinds of photos remind me of the beauty in the rain.

Video of the Day: Demystifying airplane bathrooms

“The toilet is interesting. It’s something that fascinates a lot of people.” There’s not much more that we can add to that. Well, we certainly do appreciate the reminder that you can’t get sucked into the toilet. Though, for accuracy, they probably should have explained that you will probably find that the entire bathroom is oddly wet…everywhere…from indeterminate liquids.

Photo of the day – Colorado hikers

We’ve all been there, right? We’ve all embarked on a hike somewhat carelessly, having paid only distracted attention to the weather report, only to encounter the threat of really terrible weather ahead–and usually far too late to take normal precautions. Or we’ve done our weather forecast research with nerdy focus only to find that it was all wrong and the weather patterns have changed dramatically.

Usually, this sort of discovery happens during a tame weekend walk through some fields or over a hilly outcropping of rock on the outskirts of a city. In other words, the discovery of unwanted weather conditions happens only rarely in a natural setting as glorious as this one. This image was snapped by Flickr user AlphaTangoBravo in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

We’re always excited to add arresting images as Photos of the Day. Why not upload some of your favorite images to the Gadling Group pool on Flickr?
