Photo of the day – Alabaster craftsman

Theodore Scott captured this image of an alabaster craftsman in Volterra, Italy. I love how the entire workspace calls alabaster to mind. Beyond the shelf and work space, both heaving with alabaster, there are the luminous windows and the craftsman’s silver-white helmet of hair. I began to wonder: Do other craftspeople begin to look like their materials at some point in their careers?

Photo of the day – British Columbia storm

A storm off Ucluelet, British Columbia is the subject of today’s Photo of the Day, snapped by Flickr user James Wheeler. The rocks in the foreground, the cute lighthouse, and the turbulent sky all provide compelling contrasts here. The April storm seems at once dramatically terrifying and insubstantial.

Video of the Day – Make your travel photos Hollywood-worthy

Vacation photos can sometimes be disappointing, or at very least, a little less ‘epic’ than how you remembered them. But as Youtube user postjhb shows us in today’s Video of the Day, all it takes to turn those summer vacation stills into moving masterpieces is a Photoshop tutorial and a little creative energy.

If you need some inspiration for this summer’s big getaway, hit play & check out postjhb’s technique. It boils down to 4 simple steps; taking two good photos (one with the subject & one without), extracting the subject from the background in Photoshop, and then using a video editor to cause the two layers to move against each other. The full process is outlined here.

If that’s a little too complicated, try some of Gadling’s easy Travel Photo Tips so that you’re all ready to shoot like a pro as this summer kicks off! If you already have a shot (or video) you’re proud of, submit it to Gadling’s Flickr Pool or leave a comment below & it could be our next Photo/Video of the Day!

Video of the Day: Driving in hail

Summer is a great time for road trips and spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, soaring temperatures and humidity also bring some pretty dramatic weather. In this video, people are caught driving around in golf ball-sized hail. Sadly, the person who posted the video failed to include the location in the description. From the sounds of the hail hitting the car, however, we can at least be certain that some damage was being done.

Enjoy your summer travels but always be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave the house. Sometimes a shield might be better than an umbrella!

Photo of the Day- Rainbow Bridge

Today’s Photo of the Day of Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo, Japan, at night. comes from Flickr user Marc-André Mireault who captions “The rainbow does not really come fro the bridge itself, but from the colourful boats in front of it!”
