Video of the Day: Wind in Palm Springs overwhelms reporter

We’ve all had unpleasant weather ruin a trip. But imagine having to record a news report during epic winds. Well, that’s what CBS reporter Marissa Mike was trying to do recently in Palm Springs. Unfortunately, her insistence on wearing a hat and confusion over what to call a traffic signal made filing her report about the wind quite difficult. The winds themselves had something to do with that, too, of course.

The lesson here, of course, is that news reports about weather serve no purpose other than to embarrass local journalists. If the weather was that dangerous, the Emergency Broadcast System would start beeping, we would all mute our televisions because we’d think it was only a test and we’d all be killed.

Our photo of the day, The blue Adriatic Sea off the coast of Piran, was photographed through a hotel window and comes from Flickr member SummitVoice1 who tells us

“Blue is such a soothing color, so I wanted to see if I could compile a photoblog using blue as a theme. Turns out, I only had to use about a quarter of my archives to come up with a respectable set. This shot was taken from the window of the Hotel Piran in Piran, Slovenia.”

Photo of the day – Icelandic lighthouse

Today’s photo of the day, taken by Flickr user Samer Farha, depicts an Icelandic lighthouse. Nothing speaks to the isolation of the ocean like a lighthouse. This one, taken in the county of Gullbringusýsla in the west of Iceland, is weatherbeaten. And while its bold red stripes may compensate somewhat for its worn state, the overwhelming sense here is of a place stranded at the end of the world.

Photo of the day – A day at the beach

Sometimes a perfect day at the beach isn’t all cerulean blue skies and crystal clear water. Sometimes it’s a windy afternoon, after the season is over, but you can enjoy the solitude and serenity of the ocean. Flickr user t2mujin took in such a scene on a March day in Lisbon, Portugal for today’s Photo of the Day. We might be looking at a fisherman‘s gear or just someone eager for summer, even if winter hasn’t quite made a final exit.

Video of the Day – Musical Birds on Wires

This video has been making the rounds on the internet for about two years, but every time I watch, it brings a smile to my face.

In 2009, São Paulo based musician Jarbas Agnelli came across a photo in a newspaper of birds perched on electric wires. His musical curiosity took over, and he decided to find out if the birds created some sort of melody based on their positions on the wires. Sure enough, a surprisingly well constructed melody emerged, and Agnelli posted the final result in this video.

Agnelli later gave a talk at TEDx São Paulo to discuss the piece and has been interviewed with the original photographer, Paulo Pinto, in the same newspaper that the photo first appeared.
