30th anniversary for STA, 30 chances for you to win a trip in April

Trips have officially replaced goody bags as the party-favor-of-choice (and not a moment too soon). STA Travel celebrates its 30th anniversary by giving away a trip every day in April.

Most of the trips slated to be given away are to Europe, but they’re also to United Arab Emirates, Australia, and South Africa, as well as Canada and within the US. It all depends on what day you enter and win. The destination for the first day of the giveaway, April 1st, is United Arab Emirates.

To enter, go to STA’s “30 Days of Free Travel” website after it launches on April 1st. There, you’ll want to provide your name, email, status (student, youth under 26, teacher, or parent), zip code, and where you want to travel this summer. Yes, in sticking with the ’30’ theme, you must be 30-years-old or younger to win.

Quite a year for Alaska: 50th anniversary and summer deals

As the most remote state, Alaska is often overlooked or delayed as a travel destination. But this might be the year to rethink that.

In anticipation of a slow summer season, the state’s travel industry association is pulling out all of the stops to assure travelers that it’s affordable and accessible. The high season is still a few months away (May-September), but we’re already getting word of travel deals.

The Alaska Travel Industry Association’s website has started a running tally of deals from the 1,100 businesses that make up the organization. Here’s a stand-out: a seven-night Alaska cruise for $399.

Yet another reason to go: this year marks the state’s 50th anniversary, which bodes well for both deals and celebrations. Are you turning 50 this year, too? You’re in luck–you can ride on the Alaska Railroad for free and get the 2nd night of your stay at a Denali Park Resort for free.

Check the website’s travel news bulletin for information on new facilities, tours, deals, and events.

Cuba’s 50th anniversary

Cuba has a lot to mull over as it rushes in the new year. That’s because it’s no longer up to Fidel to make decisions about the nation’s state — particularly with regard to its relations with the world’s most powerful nations (Russia, China, and the United States to name a few…). It’s up to Fidel’s brother, Raúl, who officially took the reigns from an ailing Fidel back in February.

Fifty years ago today, Fidel Castro marched his revolutionary troops down to Havana and freed his nation from dictator Fulgencio Batista. It only seems fitting, then that this photo is Cuban propaganda that says, “Fight and conquer the impossible.” Let no one argue Fidel’s power and influence in Cuba. He entered the picture fifty years ago. The rest, they say, is history. Soon after Castro’s rising, the U.S. government banned exports and broke diplomatic relations with Cuba. The Bay of Pigs, the Cold War, Guantanamo are all marked in his nation’s history, indicating moments of victory, defeat, and uncertainty.
To be certain, this new year will be an exciting and perhaps tumultuous one for this Caribbean nation. The Guantanamo military prison, which Bush opened in January 2002 in response to the September 11 attacks, will likely close very soon. Some European countries such as France, Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland are considering taking in some Guantanamo detainees. Obama, once inaugurated, will likely open talks with Raúl Castro, possibly ending a near-fifty year cold shoulder and allowing greater ease in travel between the two countries. Citizens of both are optimistic.

Perhaps, when the next holiday season comes around, loved ones will not need to rely on web-based shopping sites to send gifts.

Happy birthday, Brooklyn Bridge

As a New Yorker, I sometimes tend to get a bit jaded about the incredible sights all around me. Times Square might be cool to visitors, but to me it’s nothing but gaudy neon and schlocky souvenirs. United Nations? Pretty neat, but quite a headache when you’re trying to get to work on the East Side and some diplomat’s motorcade makes you take the “long walk” to the office.

But then today, I noticed that it was the 125th anniversary of the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge and I had to take pause. The Brooklyn Bridge is probably my favorite New York landmark – not only for the breathtaking views you get when you walk across it, but also for its historic importance to the city and to American innovation in general. First opened on May 24th, 1883, the 6,000 foot long bridge was considered one of the greatest American engineering marvels of its time. It is perhaps a fitting tribute that the bridge is still fully operational today, transporting pedestrians and vehicles much as it did when it first opened 125 years ago.

If you happen to be in New York this evening, take a stroll down to the old bridge and check out the festivities, which include fireworks, a new lighting scheme and even a U.S. Navy flyover. And if you can’t make it, make sure to stroll across it the next time you’re in town. It’s definitely worth the trip.

Conch Republic’s 25th Anniversary, April 23

On April 23rd, the Conch Republic will officially celebrate its 25th Anniversary as a free nation. Okay, so the Conch Republic — more commonly known as Key West — isn’t really a free nation, though they did make a much publicized attempt at secession in 1982 after border patrol agents set up road blocks to search for drugs and illegal immigrants. Even today, the Republic uses the motto, “We Seceded Where Others Failed.” Every April, the Republic celebrates its independence. This year, they plan to go all out.

If you can get yourselves down to the area in time, you can be part of the festivities. Beginning April 20th and running through the 29th, the City will be sponsoring numerous events, including:

  • FRIDAY, APRIL 20th — A Kick-Off Party at the Schooner Wharf Bar, featuring a Conch Shell Blowing Contest.
  • SATURDAY, APRIL 21st — The Great Conch Republic Drag Race. Sanctioned by the Conch Republic’s NHRA (Natural Hot Rod Association), the race features Drag Queens. Pits open at 12; Foam wrestling at bubbles over at 5. At 8, The Green Parrot will elect the 2006-2007 Conch Republic Royal Family.
  • THURSDAY, APRIL 26th — For the 12th year in a row, the Republic’s only totally impromptu Parade — The “World’s Longest Parade” — will roll down Duval Street from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. How can it be impromptu if we all know about it? You’ll see…
  • FRIDAY, APRIL 27th — The City will stage a mock battle in which it emerges victorious from enemy forces. The event includes cannon-firings, a raising of the flag, and lots of beer drinking.
  • SATURDAY, APRIL 28th — The Fairvilla Megastore Annual Conch Republic Red Ribbon Bed Race will be staged. What?! You’ve never seen beds race down narrow roads? You have not lived, sir. Later that night, you can crash Sloppy Joe’s Post Bed Race Pajama Party…since you’re already dressed for bed!

There are actually way more events than this planned. If you’re interested, check out the schedule!
