The top 50 cities for quality of life

If you don’t live in Vienna, you might consider moving there.

A new survey lists the top 50 cities for quality of life and Vienna comes out as number one. The survey, conducted by Mercer, a human resources consultancy firm, looked at criteria such as infrastructure, economy, housing, recreation, personal and press freedom, and education. Vienna certainly scores high in all that, plus it has historic neighborhoods and cool clocks. It’s just a shame the Toilet Bar had to change its decor.

The top ten cities are:

Vienna
Zurich
Geneva
Vancouver
Auckland
Dusseldorf
Frankfurt
Munich
Bern
Sydney

European cities dominate the top fifty. No U.S. city shows up until number 31 (Honolulu) followed by San Francisco (32), Boston (37), Chicago and Washington (tied at 45), New York City (49) and Seattle coming in surprisingly low at 50. Canada did much better with Vancouver at number 4, Ottawa at 14, Toronto at 16, Montreal at 21, and Calgary at 28.

Mercer actually surveyed 221 cities, with Baghdad scoring dead last. Go figure. They also listed the most eco-friendly cities, with Calgary taking the top spot.

JetBlue pilot removed from Boston plane after gun threat incident

A JetBlue co-pilot has been removed from his Boston crew lounge when he sent an email to his ex-girlfriend mentioning his plans to harm himself.

The pilot is a member of the TSA Federal Flight Deck Officer program, which allows pilots to carry guns on their plane – the program was developed after the attacks on 9/11. Upon being confronted by authorities, the pilot handed over the gun and was taken to a local hospital for mental evaluation.

Local authorities were quick to point out that the man never threatened passengers and was only considered a threat to himself.

Four New England family packages for summer

The school year is coming to an end, and summer vacation plans are starting to pop up. With heat poised to sweep the nation, the cool New England air (at least relatively cool) makes it an attractive destination. There are plenty of deals out there at the region’s inns and resorts, so you’ll have plenty of options at your disposal.

1. New England Aquarium Family Package
Do you need a reason to stay at Boston‘s Fairmont Copley Plaza? It’s a great property right in the Back Bay, and parents who love martinis will want to run downstairs to the Oak Bar for a drink. In addition to the fantastic accommodations, you’ll pick up four tickets to the New England Aquarium (two adults and two kids). Prices start at $239 a night (not bad at all for this property) and are good through the end of the year.

2. Family Fun Package
Get away to Kennebunkport, Maine for four nights (with a water-view room) at the Nonantum Resort’s Carriage Inn. The package includes a full breakfast every day, dinner one night in the 95 Ocean restaurant, a poolside lunch one day and an overflowing Nonantum beach bag. You’ll also score tickets for the Intown Trolley, a scenic boat ride, bottled water, an in-room welcome basket, Kennebunk Beach Pass and resort coupons. Rates start at $1,249 for a family of three, with each additional adult costing $359 and each extra kid $100. The deal is available Sunday through Thursday from June 20 to September 2, 2010.3. StoryLand All-Inclusive Family Vacation
Visit with a bit of help from the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club in Jackson, New Hampshire. This package includes a two-night stay, breakfast and dinner daily and a free nine-hole round of golf. You’ll also get tickets to StoryLand for every family member for one day. Rates start at $509 and are available from June 25 through October 10, 2010.

4. Catch Me if You Can
Visit Catamount Adventure Park, a new ropes and zipline canopy tour, and stay at The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. To help you get through the experience, you’ll receive a backpack with bottled water and trail mix for two upon arrival – and breakfast the following day. Rates start at $405, available from May 31 through September 16, 2010.

Daily Pampering: Martini Club shakes its way into Boston’s Colonnade Hotel

The traditional martini is getting all shook up in Boston’s Back Bay. Brasserie JO at The Colonnade Hotel is giving Bostonians a new reason to clink glasses after a long day. The stylish restaurant has introduced a Brasserie JO Martini Club, complete with a membership card and martini menu.

You’ll earn a stamp on a club card with each order (limit of two martinis per patron per visit) and once you fill your card you can hand it in for a prize (because what fun is a martini if there’s no prize at end?). Show your martini status in exchange items including baseball caps, polo shirts, Martini shakers and martini glasses. If you’re one of the first 20 to fill your card you’ll get a free day pass to The Colonnade’s rooftop pool.

While prizes are always fun, the martini menu is what holds the real excitement. It features 14 twists on the classic cocktail, including:
A Casablanca-inspired French 75 (Bombay Sapphire, Cointreau, lemon juice and champagne)
The bold Aviation — an “aerodynamic” blend of grapefruit-infused tequila, Grand Marnier and tamarind
L’Opera — a theatrical concoction of Canton Ginger liqueur, passion fruit, organic lavender syrup and champagne
Martinique — conjuring a soft Caribbean breeze with Barcardi O, Crème de Peche, cassis, pineapple juice and champagne
Espresso – a java jolt of “Stoli” Vanil, Kahlua, Tia Maria and espresso
L’Artiste – a creative combination of Hendrick’s gin with organic cilantro syrup, jalapeño and lemon juice.

Martinis are priced at $12, with the exception of two Grand Martinis priced at $14. Club members receive credit only for martinis they purchase for themselves (read: buying rounds of cocktails for your friends will only result in lost money, not gained gifts).
