Photo of the Day (8.24.10)

I think it’s fair to say that everyone deserves to experience a moment like this in their lifetime. A remote beach. A dramatic sunset. Stormy clouds hanging in the distance with nightfall soon approaching. Flickr user Ka wai punahele immortalized this picture perfect moment on the coast of Australia’s sparse Northern Territory, just outside the city of Darwin.

Casuarina Beach (the gorgeous subject of the photo) is in Darwin’s northern suburb of Brinkin, which is just a stone’s throw from the Darwin Airport. Darwin is one of Australia’s most modern capital cities, having been rebuilt once after WWII and again in 1974 after Cyclone Tracy.

Strolling along the shore at sunset can be magical. But is it better to be alone so that you can enjoy some quiet introspection or with someone so that the setting can help set a mood that you hope to sustain back at your house with some wine and a Barry White CD? Are sunsets best enjoyed in solitude or with company? There are merits to both. On the one hand, enjoying nature’s beauty alone allows you to reflect on the day’s events, their context in your life and what promise the following day may hold. On the other, sharing such a moment with a loved one allows you to get lost together and feel as if the rest of the world has ceased to exist. I wonder if Flickr user Andy Bokanev was with anyone when he captured this stunning image at Puget Sound. I wonder if he likes Barry White.

Video of the week (4.2.10)

Today’s video of the week comes from TheAlohaRobert on YouTube. Called simply Hawaii Time Lapse in HD, it’s a mesmerizing look at the beautiful Hawaiian landscape. But I was most impressed with the active cloud formations that often travel in different directions in the same scene. It’s proof of the changing winds aloft at different altitudes that pilots try to take advantage of.

People talk about the sky being “bigger” out West, and I think after seeing this photo, I understand why. As you might notice on the sign, Flickr user Syggiti took this shot at the Continental Divide in Colorado. The towering clouds hover above a vast cluster of moutains, lending a sense of space and huge size. Meanwhile the tiny green flecks of pine trees and dabs of cool snow add some visual intrigue. It’s positively postcard-worthy – nice work.

Light and shadow are the photographer’s secret weapons, something artfully demonstrated in this image from Flickr user nabil.s. Nabil took this shot of the Andean Mountains in Peru, darkened by eerie clouds and enveloped by the oncoming dusk. I love the tiny plot of brightly-lit mountain in the background. It looks like it’s about to be swallowed by an approaching monster.
