Why the Finnish are such smarty-pants

Why is it that some relatively minor country always wins out over Japan or Germany or the UK (the US doesn’t have a chance) for having the brightest kids in the world? This year, it’s Finland. Hong Kong came in second. Both economies barely make a dent when it comes to global superpowers, yet they’ve managed to churn out quite a number of smarty-pants.

For Finland, the clue lies in an educational system where there’s no such thing as tuition and high school students receive freebies like meals and books. Still, it’s a bit surprising that not more Asian countries are topping this list, considering how hard students are pushed there. For instance, it’s not unusual for kids in China to begin studying for the college entrance exam in 7th grade. And that’s if the kid’s somewhat of a beach bum.

The list was based on testing high schoolers in each of the countries. What that made me think about was exactly how much fun and leisure time students from these countries have? Is it just me or does it seem that the Fins still manage to throw some good parties? Kind of interesting they’re so smart without seeming like bookworms.

Test Your African Geography Knowledge with Statetris: Africa

Okay, we’ve got the original Testris-Geography mashup game called Statetris for the U.S., and then things got a bit tougher (for me) with the follow-up, Statetris: Europe. Now we’ve got new one: Statetris Africa. This one’s a doozy.

Africa is tough! I’m struggling to put countries like Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire in their correct places — and I was a Geography major in school! Problem is, even if you know where these countries are physically located, they may not be facing the correct way in the game. Just like in real Tetris, you’ve got to rotate the falling countries until they’re correctly orientated. [via]

Flickrvision 3D: Maps Images on 3-Dimensional Globe

Here’s a Friday time waster if there ever was one. Flickrvision (previously on Gadling here) has released a new 3D version of it’s popular Flickr-Google Maps mashup interface. Instead of the flat world map of Flickrvision standard, 3D displays recently-uploaded Flickr images on a Google Earth-looking globe.

This is dangerous; I could literally spend hours watching new bubble pop up in different locations around the world. There’s also options to adjust the tilt, zoom and make it full screen. If only this could be ported into a screen saver, I’d be set.

Test Your US Geography Knowledge with Statetris

I ran across this game over at our sister blog Download Squad — it’s called Statetris (States + Tetris = Statetris). It’s just like Tetris, only the colorful blocks that fall from the sky have been replaced with states. This is actually a bit harder than it looks, especially when the East Coast states like New Hampshire and Vermont and Rhode Island start to fall. Plus, the states don’t always fall facing the correct way. Sometimes you have to hit your keyboard’s up arrow to spin it around and make it fit, just like in real Tetris.

Good luck.
