Here’s a travel tidbit for you guys: Did you know that it was 95 years ago that the first rapid transit subway, the IRT, opened in New York City?

We have certainly come a long way in a century, and 95 years from now we’ll be just as astound at how travel times have changed. But let’s get to the travel stories circulating the Web right now, shall we? Here are some good reads to tie you over.

‘Til tomorrow, have a great evening!

Hey there, fans o’ Gadling! You’ve just stumbled across our daily look at some of the most interesting travel tidbits from around the internets. Enjoy!

  • From the learn-something-new-every-day department: “Bolivia: The Saudi Arabia of Lithium.” Finally some good news for South America’s poorest country.
  • In his article “Against Apple Picking,” Slate columnist Daniel Gross decries pick-your-own apple orchards as a “wasteful scam.” (What’s next, Slate? “Against Grandma”? “Against Apple Pie”?)
  • The Onion’s fake weekly newsmag explores a question I’ve often wondered about Disney World.
  • Where to go for cheap dining in Manhattan. (Check out the comments for some delicious sub-$10 meals.)
  • Ever thought about trying to run marathons on all seven continents? Turner Wright is here to tell you you’re not insane (and I’m here to tell you, wait, yes you are.)

Hope everyone’s having a great week thus far. If not, take heart– the weekend is nigh! Now here’s a look at what’s going on in the travel world today…

  • World Hum’s David Frey chats with New York Times do-gooder Nicholas Kristof. On the joys of traveling in the U.S., Kristof says, “You don’t encounter a lot of warlords, you rarely get malaria or intestinal worms, and airports aren’t strewn with the carcasses of crashed planes. I love traveling in the United States!”
  • My friends at the bookmark-worthy site Brave New Traveler make an appearance (sort of) on The Colbert Report.
  • Tyler Cowen points to a Russian armored-car maker who’s outfitting its newest model, reportedly the most expensive SUV ever made, with whale penis leather trim.
  • Over at the Anderson Cooper 360 blog, Art of Nonconformity blogger Chris Guillebeau lists the 28 things he wish he’d known before he started traveling.
  • Finally, I’ll bet Antarctica is bigger than you thought.
